Fandom: Supernatural (general background, but original characters)
Prompt 433 Badge
Words: 559
Mackenzie didn't even look up when she gave her the leather wallet, like it was a trifling detail in their readying. When Katrina took it and felt the metal badge on it, she realized it wasn't a wallet, but some fake governemental identification. And it was kind of a big deal, at least to her.
"What's this ?", she asked, annoyed, shaking the badge under Mac's nose. She finally looked up, her business face showing no emotion whatsoever.
"It's a FBI badge", she answered evenly.
"A fake one."
"Of course, a fake one. You haven't trained to be a FBI agent, have you?"
"It's illegal."
Annoyance bloomed on Mac's face, and she sighed deeply. Katrina knew she wasn't going to like what she was about to hear.
"It's necessary, Dummy. How do you plan on making witness confide in you without some official accreditation?"
Katrina shrugged. "I don't know, by talking to them and make them trust us?" She might not have think their course of action thoroughly, but she didn't think they needed fake ID's to make people talk to them. She was likeable, she never had any trouble making people talk to her. She could see why Mac "The Ice Queen" could have needed them to get people to confide in her, but still. She was there, now, there was no need to con people anymore.
"And how much time do you think it would take you?", Mac asked further. "Little enough to prevent the next death?"
Katrina opened her mouth, but didn't say anything just yet. She didn't like the contemptuous tone Mac had adopted, but she had to admit the other woman had a point. She was fast at making friends, but probably not enough to prevent another kill, especially if she was to work the case at the same time.
"Ok", she said eventually. "I see your point, but I still think there're other ways."
"There are, it's true", Mac acknowledged, bowing her head a little. "But those badges give us something else: access to police's data."
Katrina winced. "Yeah, I guess it would be complicated to charm our way to those files, woudn't it?"
Mac smiled at least. "Yes, it would. Though charm's been known to work with some law enforcers."
There was a story behind that comment, Katrina could feel it, and she had a hard time stopping herself from asking. Mac wasn't the sharing type usually, but right now, with a wendigo presumably on the loose, she would never get into storytelling time. Kat mentally filed the info for a later stakeout or a night off. If she picked her moment wisely, she would have her story, and maybe even a bit more.
While Mackenzie was gathering professional-looking clothes to get dressed in their small motel bathroom, Katrine flipped the badge open, and examined it with curiosity.
"Where do you get does done anyway?", she asked machinally, not really expecting an answer.
Mac stopped at the bathroom door, and pondered her answer for a second, before saying : "You wouldn't believe the kind of artist we've got in the hunting network. Give it a little time and you'll get to know them too." And with it, she went to change into Agent Heathcliff.
Katrina brought her gaze back on Agent Earnshaw's badge in her hand. That was going to be interesting.
