Prompt #440 Curmudgeon

"Oh, so you've decided to honor me with your presence", the metallic voice complained as soon as Mandy had stepped inside the ship. She rolled her eyes, prepared to such a welcome. Bernie was always complaining about something, and she has learned not to take it too personally. Beside, what could a spaceship AI possibly know about what kind of on-planet downtime was appropriate for a young captain like her?

Bernie would probably answer that he had had enough captain during his activated time to know what was and wasn't appropriate for anyone. The AI was like an old, grumpy grandfather to her, an despite all his sarcasms and sneaky remarks, she had grown attached to him over the years.

"Well, hello to you too, Bernie", she responded brightly, accentuating her good mood just to annoy him. "Did you miss me so badly when I was gone?"

"Hardly", sneered the AI. "But as much a relief it was to not have you messy person on board for a couple of days, I have to wonder – to fear, even – what you could possibly have done on a planet like Osiris. This place is a refuge to the worst individuals of the galaxy. It is not a suitable place for a young lady like you."

Mandy smirked while she walked to the rear panel command, opening it to load the supplies she had bought during her stay. "Osiris isn't exactly a cut-throat anymore, Bernie. I wasn't even born when they cleaned up the place to turn it into a recreational planet. It's a very proper place to go for a captain on holidays."

The AI stayed silent while the spatioport workers loaded the ship with several crates of food and other necessities. Mandy knew better than to think their argument was over. In fact, she knew exactly what was following, and practically mouthed it in synch after she closed the panel.

"It is not how you are going to find a suitable husband, hanging out in shady places like that."

Mandy smiled as she put the supplies where they belonged. The argument was as old as her captaincy of the ship. "And that's for the best, Bernie. Why would I want a husband when I already have to put up with you?"

Not that she really was bothered by the AI's behavior. If she had, she would have had all the time in the world to have it reprogammed by now. The truth was that she liked the persona, and wouldn't want it any other way. They might argue sometimes, but Mandy was sure that, somewhere deep in his emotional chip, Bernie was as fond of her as she was of him. They just left it unsaid.

The young woman walked to the cockpit and sat in her chair, booting the process to take off. The engines purred to life, and lights appeared here and there on the console.

"A husband would teach you some manners", Bernie grumbled between two notifications.

"Come on, Bernie, we both know I'm a lost cause to that."
