Summary: "I'm sorry. They don't understand here. I'll take you back tomorrow."

Pearl frowned at her plant. The leaves should have been bright green and aiming for the sky by now but there were not. They were pale and their sprouts seemed to struggle to climb out of the pot. She knew the air of the city wasn't good for it but she hadn't exposed it too much and in spite of the pollution clouds that covered the sky, she still had managed to find enough sun to warm the seeds. She touch the leave hesitantly. She could feel the grime of the city. She sighed. Her plant was going to die.

"I'm sorry," she whispered.

"Who are you talking to?"

Pearl spun around in surprise. Mike was standing by her door. "Jack wants to see you," he simply said before leaving. Pearl nodded to the empty corridor. She looked back at her plant and whispered, "I'm sorry. They don't understand here. I'll take you back tomorrow." She caressed the diseased leaves tenderly, hoping that tomorrow wouldn't be too late for the plant.

"Where are we going," Pearl moaned. Miranda gripped her hand harder.

"I told you, you need new clothes. We're going shopping."

"Do we really have to?" Pearl had to strain her voice to be heard over the rumble of the cars and the constant hammering of steps on the pavement.

"You can't wear my clothes forever."

Pearl stopped and looked down at the oversized clothes on her. She didn't like them. They itched against her skin and where always getting in the way of her movements. She knew she needed something with a better fit but she doubted that any clothes from the city would ever feel comfortable against her body. They would never be able to embrace her as her old garment did.

"I know," she murmured.

"What?" Miranda drew closer to hear her words.

"Let's go."

Miranda nodded and dragged her further into the city.

"I'm hungry," Pearl grumbled.

"The fridge's empty..." Miranda replied absent-mindedly.

"Can we not forage some food? I mean go out and buy some food," Pearl corrected herself. She still wasn't used to the way those people considered food. It was all available on market stalls in exchange of coins. This didn't make sense. No one in this city seemed to be self-sufficient and most people had no idea of where the food actually came from.

"Forage food?" Miranda giggled as she took her nose out of her book. "We can order something though."

"What if I took you foraging instead?" The idea of eating something pre-packaged was not what she had had in mind. The produces were bad enough as it was on the market but she could get used to that. The ready-made food though she didn't think she ever could.

Miranda smiled but Pearl could see that she didn't really mean it. Her eyes were sorry. "I know..." Pearl apologised before her friend could utter a word. "It's not a good idea to leave the city right now." She dropped her gaze. "Let's order something," she added deafeated.
