Cross-dimensional trips were a lot better organised than Stefanie had thought at first. The fairies had a whole network on Earth for those kind of missions, and humans were involved. Very few fairies had the autorisation to stay on this side for an extended period of time, and they had had to put their trust in some of the locals to maintain a lasting back-up system for missions like Athcas'. It also helped to have someone human-sized to deal with Earth rules and limitations. Fairies were way too small to pass as humans, even the shape-shifting ones.
The marvel of fairy organisation on Earth, though, wasn't what fascinated Stefanie the most. She was rather interested in the spy novel-like adventure said organisation was putting her through.
"How long before he notices the change in the gnome pattern?", she asked with a low voice, hoping no one would hear her. Athcas, hidden in her purse, replied in a whisper:
"No idea. We're supposed to stay on sight and wait for the kitchen window to open."
Stefanie made a face. "I can't just stay here on the sidewalk for hours! It's going to look suspicious as hell."
Athcas shrugged. "Don't know. Find something to do, or whatever."
The human looked around, trying to think of something. The neighborhood wasn't a busy one, and no coffee shop was conveniently situated within eyeshot. There were several places where a fairy of Athcas' size could hide itself, but nothing for a human. Of course. All she could do was take upon residence in one of the residential gardens, but she doubted their owners would be that pleased, which was a pity, because some of this island of greenery were magnificent.
That's when she had an idea.
"Ath, can you dig a pencil for me?", she asked her purse. The little fairy shrugged again, and looked around to find the object. It eventually found one in a side pocket, with some kind of cap on it to protect the lead.
"Here it is", it said, holding the pencil out. Stefanie took it, and made Athcas move on one side of the bag to get a notebook out of it. She took a few steps to her left, and settled on a stone edge, her notebook on her lap.
"What are you gonna do?" the fairy asked.
"Draw", Stefanie replied, putting the lead of her pencil on a blank page. "Or at least try to. I'm not an artist, but at least, it'll look like I'm here for a reason."
Forntunately for Stefanie, they didn't have to wait too long. About twenty minutes later, the kitchen door opened, and Athcas got out of her purse and disappear through the crack faster than the human would have thought. Stefanie took her time to put her things back into the bag, and went to the door of the Helper's house to knock. The plan was that Athcas would go inside first, and tell its contact about her. She then would knock and join them. Stefanie had tought about letting Athcas go inside and then run away, leaving all potential fairy problems behind, but curiosity got the better of her, and she had followed through with their plan.
Athcas knew where she lived, anyway.
The door opened on a man looking barely out of college, with the laid-back feeling of a band member. He wasn't what she had expected.
"Stefanie?", he asked with a little nod of the head.
"Ah, yes, yes, it's me", she answered, recovering from her surprise.
He took a couple of steps back and held the door open gesturing her to come in. She stepped inside the house, into a minimalist entryway, and he closed the door behind. He then led her to the main room, a shabby but cozy living room, where Athcas was already sitting on the coffee table, eating from a little plate of cookies in front of it.
"I'm Angel, by the way", he said. "Funny way to stumble into the fairy world, right?"
"I guess", she answered.
"Sit down, both of you", Athcas whined from the coffee table. "You're already too tall like that."
Stefanie threw the fairie a dirty look, but Angel chuckled and pointed out the couch to Stefanie. She sat in it, sinking slightly in it, while the man took place in an armchair next to it.
"I don't know what Ahtcas told you about that story...", Stefanie began, hesitating on what she was supposed to do or say now.
"A broad summary of the events", Angel answered, waving a hand to representing the haziness of said summary. "Edisani's situation is preoccupaying, indeed."
"Well", Stefanie spoke, "I was hoping we would speak about the portal in my basement, actually. So you could fix it and find a solution for that Guardian story."
It's not that she wasn't curious about the fairies and the situation she had just discovered, but she wanted the opportunity to back out of all this as soon as she wanted to, with her basement fixed and the coming and going through the portal regulated some way or another.
"I can't fix the portal myself", Angel said to her great disappointement. "And it's not really a pressing matter. Your portal is only a secondary way between the realms. It's Edisani, the real problem here."
"Those shape-shifters", Athcas said between two bites. "Always causing troubles around. No wonder they are excluded from society."
Angel shook his head with a small smile. "You shouldn't be that quick judging the Dahrani, Ath. They aren't different from the Dusemn. The two species have been separated for no more than two hundred years."
"Propaganda", Athcas dissmissed with a shrug.
"Hardly", Angel said. "But I guess it's easier to reject people when you think they are completely different from you. Though, honestly, I don't understand why you find them so strange when you can change you fur color at will."
Athcas sent him a dirty look, and Stefanie opened her eyes wide.
"Change color?", she asked Angel, then turned toward the fairy. "You didn't tell me you coud do that!"
"Of course not! I don't know you, after all."
It was indeed a good reason.
