Prompt #458 Twister
"That's definitely not good news", Athcas mused, nodding for itself with a cookie crumb in the hand. "Knowing the Elders, they'll put the blame on me."
"That's ridiculous", Stefanie countered. "I'm the one who closed your portal, and it was an accident. You hadn't even show yourself to me! They can't blame you if their portals are vulnerable to human cleaning products."
They were still sitting in Angel's living room, where the young man had told them a bunch of things, including how to open the portal again. The level of magic involved in the operation made it clear that even if they had that kind of power, there was no chance to reopen it discreetly. Meaning that Athcas' bosses were going to find out about that whole mess, and probably punish it for it. The fairy didn't look pleased at that perspective.
"You don't know them, Stef. They won't care." Athcas made a face and let the crumb fall in the plate. "What are the odds they think a twister in the middle of the city is a natural occurence?"
Angel shook his head. "Coming out of nowhere? None. They'll send somebody to investigate as soon as possible. That's what they did when that twister went down in a corn field a few miles way, last month."
"I remember that", Stefanie chimed in. "Meteorologists said it was a highly uncommon phenomenon."
"Which probably means magic", Athcas completed. "Egabot was sent to study it, I think. I didn't hear what it had found, though."
Angel's face darkened. "That's because nobody has heard of Egabot since it went to that field. I had it reported it to the Elders, but they said not to worry, that Eg must be on a lead."
"You don't sound too convinced", Athcas pointed out.
"Because I'm not. Eg is a good investigator. It always checks in and fills me up with what it's found. You know, so we wouldn't have to start over if something happened to it. I'm sure something's going on, but I don't have any proof."
"Wonderful", Athcas sighed. "I guess all I have left is to go back to Pioga and face whatever punishement the Elders have in store for me."
They stayed silent for a few seconds before Stefanie's voice rose. "You need to catch your shapeshifter first. They will have to be more lenient if you manage to fulfill your mission without access to the portal."
"Maybe", the fairy replied, unconvinced.
"What if you bring them an extra?", she asked.
"What are you thinking about?", Athcas asked, looking up.
"If I'm right, she's thinking about you getting a lead on Egabot's whereabouts", Angel answered calmly. Stefanie nodded.
"Think about it: a runaway fairy and an answer to some unnatural local occurence that already took one of your people away? That kind of good job must be worth something, even in regard of the portal closing."
Athcas pondered the idea for a minute. "You may be right. But it's gonna take me a hell of a long time."
"I can help", Stefanie said shrugging. "I'm on leave anyway."
"It might work", Athcas nodded. "But the Elders must never know you helped me. Involving an unknowing human? Nothing in the world will avoid me a very bac punishement."
