Prompt #466 Anthomancy

Stefanie didn’t understand a lot of the discussion that followed. Too many names, too many words she didn’t recognized, even if, maybe out of respect for her, the two fairies kept speaking in a language she understood.

Athcas seemed dismayed about the news Egabot had brought. It had tried to deny it, at first, but the wounded fairy had patiently told them about the discoveries that had led to him being attacked in the corn field. His investigation on the twister was a trap; he had put his finger on some anomalies back in Pioga that were threatening the government. They had set him up to be taken out once and for all. Fairies sometimes disappeared in the human world. It was sad, but no one would have looked too much in it. If it hadn’t been for the wild fairies, Egabot would never have had the opportunity to share what he had discovered.

“I feel bad for the wild tribes I’ve sold to the government, now”, Athcas said. “They don’t look like the devils propaganda makes them to.”

“They may be even better than people back in Pioga”, Egabot replied. “They live a very peaceful life, based on acceptance and friendship. Nothing of the segregated nonsense we have back home.”

“No wonder shapeshifters and the like are always trying to escape on this side. They’re better off here than pariahs in their own homeland.”

“That’s why you were here, to begin with”, Stefanie said. “To bring a shapeshifter back.”

“Ah, yes. Edisani. But I highly doubt I’ll find him, not with all that’s happening.” Athcas paused. “I’m not sure I still want to anyway.”

The door opened and Sogum entered the room, followed by a younger-looking fairy carrying a basket. The older fairy spoke a few words in the strange language that seemed to be common to all fairies, and reached for Egabot’s bed, the young one still walking behind it.

At Egabot’s side, Sogum waved at the young one, who brought the basket near it. The older fairy took a look inside and chose a vial three-quarter empty. It gave it to Egabot, still speaking words Stefanie couldn’t understand, who drank it slowly. Sogum went then to examine the wounds and bruises left from the attack, muttering comments about them, and from time to time taking a product from the basket to apply on it.

After a while, it seemed satisfied with its work, and, turning toward Stefanie, he spoke some words she was pretty sure regarded her to some extent. Athcas pulled a face, replied in the fairy language, and then spoke to her :

“Sogum has a way to make you communicate with everyone here. You know, you’ll hear plain old English when we speak Dalar, and we’ll hear Dalar when you speak English. Just a regular thing.”

“And how exactly does he plan to do that?”, Stefanie asked, a bit skeptical.

Athcas hesitated. “Well, SHE has all those flower knowledge - that’s her race’s ability, things to do with flowers - and she made that flower potion and that’s what will make you understand.”

“You want me to drink something I know nothing about?!”

“It’s just flowers!”

“Some flowers are toxic to humans, Ath!”

“I’m sure it will be okay.”

Stefanie wasn’t sure about it, but she had been out of her element for so long she wasn’t sure it mattered anymore. And it would be nice to understand people around.

“Ok, I’ll drink your flowery thing.”

“And put it in your ears”, Athcas added sheepishly.

“What?”

“Yes, you know, so you hear the right things.”

Stefanie sighed, rolled her eyes, and motioned to Sogum to bring the potion.

Fairies.
