Summary: Derek introduces himself to Stiles, after prodding from his family.
Disclaimer: It’s all lies and I own nothing.
-- = --
The night feels something like a dance. Derek frequently shares the same space as Stiles—they come within feet of each other countless times—but they never speak, are never introduced. Not that Derek wants to be introduced to the omega, regardless of what the glances from his mother seem to be implying.
Cora keeps her arm linked through his as she leads him around the room, stopping to chat with a few alphas that catch her eye. She appears to notice his wandering attention, steers them in the direction of his drifting gaze until he’s back in Stiles’ orbit. Cora’s grip goes tighter on his arm when she realizes whom he’s been watching. Then she snorts in a very undignified manner and dissolves into giggles, drawing the attention of everyone within a twenty-foot radius. Including Stiles.
Their eyes meet and Derek feels it flare through him like a bright heat, settling pleasantly in the middle of his chest, a glowing ball of warmth surrounding his heart. It’s a strange, foreign feeling that leaves him hopeful and buoyant and slightly breathless as Stiles continues to hold his gaze.
Then someone’s at Stiles’ side, hand landing on the bare skin of his shoulder and skimming down to his elbow making Stiles flinch and Derek’s fist clench. But Scott steps in before Derek can even make a move towards him. Which is probably for the best, considering the wide-eyed look his sister’s giving him right now.
It doesn’t stop Cora for speaking up, though. “Did you just—”
“No,” Derek interrupts before anyone else can hear whatever accusations are about to come out of her mouth. He tries to turn her around and guide her back towards their parents’ table, but even as they’re moving away, she’s glancing over her shoulder and generally being very obvious, digging in her heels to get him to stop.
“But aren’t you going to introduce yourself? Derek, he’s—”
“No,” he repeats, hoping she’ll just leave it be. Of course he has no such luck; as soon as they’re within polite conversation distance of their family, she’s blabbing to their mother.
“I’m pretty sure Derek just had a moment with Stiles,” she gushes, clutching at their mother’s sleeve.
Talia smirks. “The Stilinski boy? I saw you watching him during the introductions.”
Cora practically squeals. “Will you court him?”
Derek’s shaking his head before finishes asking the question. “No. You know how I feel about… all of this” he says with a vague, all-encompassing gesture.
“But you’re here,” she argues.
“To support you.”
“Doesn’t mean you can’t meet somebody,” she grumbles, stamping a foot.
“Exactly,” his mother says. “You should introduce yourself. Then let the boy decide for himself whether or not he’s interested in a courtship.”
Behind her, his father shrugs. “Nobody’s ever caught your eye like this,” he says. “It couldn’t hurt.”
Cora gives him a none-too-gentle shove back towards Stiles. “Go on. Go. I’ll stay here with Mom and Dad. Don’t be awkward. Smile and be nice.” She shoves him again when he doesn’t immediately start moving.
People are already looking, so Derek takes a deep breath and turns around before even more start gawking. Scott is still at Stiles’ side when Derek spots them, somehow already attuned to where the omega is in the room. He’s talking to another alpha when their eyes meet again but he doesn’t look away from Derek, even when the other alpha turns to see what’s drawn Stiles’ attention away from him.
Derek’s never been nervous about approaching an omega before, but he’s never felt this connection to one before. He squares his shoulders and straightens his spine, takes another deep breath before closing the remaining distance between himself and Stiles. He nods at Scott then bows to Stiles, offering his hand. “Derek Hale. Pleased to meet you.”
Stiles glances at Scott and they share a look. Then, with color blooming high on his cheeks, Stiles accepts his hand with a smile. “Stiles Stilinski. Likewise.”
