Title: Burglary in the night

I looked around the tree I was hiding behind and hid back again. It was so dark outside I hadn’t really seen anything. I was entirely relying on the memory spell we had cast earlier and the light enhancement mantras I used so often in my work. I stayed unmoving against the tree back for a minute, waiting for any sound that would say they had spotted us, but nothing came. Joanna raised any eyebrow, more posing than actually hiding behind her own tree.
“Give me a minute”, I muttered, then closed my eyes. The pictures were far better than what I had expected. I could see the layout of the entry to the Goblin territory, with enough light to be actually useful. I gestured to Jo to get her connection on, and soon, I felt the popping feeling of someone else’s brain plugging into mine.
“Nice image, isn’t it?”, I heard Jo say in my head. Of course, she had to make sure I noticed how the mantras in their original sanskrit gave a more accurate result than the latin translation I usually used. I didn’t want to humor her on it, though, even if I could recognise that she was right.
“It will do”, I mind-replied, and changed the subject directly. “First of all, we’re gonna have to deactivate the energy field around. I can’t see any breech in it, and it is supposed to be the weakest side.”
“Those goblins don’t joke around with security”, Jo commented. “I have a spell that will make an opening big enough for you to go through, but it will probably trigger some other security mean. You’ll have to be quick.”
“If you don’t trust me on this, maybe you should to it yourself”, I grinded.
“I’m not go to roll around in the dirt, Mona, and you know it.” She didn’t even sound vexed ; she was simply enunciating a fact we both knew as true.
“You don’t have to “roll” in anything if everything goes as you said”, I muttered between gritted teeth, but she chose to ignore me. Instead, she looked up at the moon, and down at her watch.
“The phase will be perfect in a couple of minutes. I’ll open the doorway next to the big rock on the right.”
“What side?”
“Left. Your left. You have a clear image of the way?”
I breathed deeply and focused on the picture, visualizing the path I would follow. When I felt confident enough, I nodded to her.
“On three, then”, she said. “One… Two… Three!”
At the signal, I went around my tree as fast as I could, and run like crazy in direction of the rock. The day had been humid, and the ground under my feet was too soft for my comfort, but I managed to stay on track. My left side bumped against the edge of the barrier when I reached the rock and fell on my knees on the other side. I heard shouts coming from before me, and when I looked up, I saw a couple of Goblins showing up from their lair. Cursing, I took the handheld shovel I had stashed in my coat’s pocket, and dug up a square of grass with enough dirt under it to last us for a bit. I shoved the whole thing in a plastic bag and left the protection field before the goblins could reach me. From the yells I heard soon after, Jo had closed her opening behind me, trapping the inhabitants inside until they made their own door.
I reached the trees and Jo, and we went back to the car without waiting to see if they would follow us. Once we were moving on the highway, I managed to relax a bit.
“Let’s hope it will do”, I said, looking at the bag of dirt.
“It should. Goblins consecrate the place where they live. It should be as good as their actual home soil.”
I sighed. “It better be. I’m not going to Africa to do a stunt like this again.”
