The stage two trials don’t start with Stiles. There’s another dark-colored mixture that smells faintly of both Derek’s and Stiles’ blood that gets injected into three new filthy teens. One of the boys seizes less than ten minutes after the injection, ears and nose leaking black blood like the girl Derek saw that first day. The other boy and the girl show no signs of rejection. The scientists or lab techs—Gerard’s morally compromised minions—take various samples from all three and make notes on their clipboards, ignoring Derek and Stiles, before sedating the survivors and hauling them into cells further down the hall.
Two more days pass and eight kids are injected. Another girl rejects the serum or elixir or whatever the hell is in the syringe. The other seven are put into cells.
On the fourth day, Derek is forced to give more blood and the techs take samples from Stiles and the other nine teens. One of the girls dies in the middle of the night, wailing and growling through the pain before she starts choking on wet-sounding breaths. As she writhes on the floor, nails scratching loudly against the cement, each of her coughs is followed by a splatter of something thick and viscous. Derek can’t see much through the dark, just her shape between the bars and past the other kids huddle into themselves against the bars of their cells as far away from her as they can get. It doesn’t take long for a couple of the techs to come in, one training a crossbow on the girl’s body while the other carefully opens the cell door. They’re not taking any chances; the man that unlocked the door shocks the girl’s limp body with a cattle prod and she doesn’t react. They drag her into the lab, collect their samples, then disappear with her body.
The following day, the second phase of stage two starts. The eight remaining teens are injected with another dark serum, but this time there’s a hint of iridescence to it. All eight survive long enough to be returned to their cells. One of the boys shifts a couple of hours later, claws sprouting from the tips of his fingers as fangs erupt from his gums. Over the other teens’ fear Derek can smell the boy’s blood and panic, can hear his heart rate spiking. The boy claws at the floor leaving long gouges, he scratches until his fingers bleed. His spine bows and contorts as his body changes. Derek listens to his bones crack as his body physically starts to shift, too, into some abominable cross between Derek’s full wolf shift and his beta form. It’s some kind of humanoid wolf shape, not unlike Peter’s when he was alpha. The boy’s body hair turns thick and coarse and his eyes glow a sickly shade of orange. He howls and crawls towards the cell door, whining and recoiling when he comes in contact with the iron bars as he’s shocked with an electric current. It goes on for long minutes, the techs arriving soon after he shifts and standing outside the door observing. He begs for their help but he’s nothing more than an experiment to him. The boy continues to plead, face pressed to the floor, each breath starting to sound familiarly wet. He starts coughing up black blood within minutes. It takes him a long time to die and he keeps begging for help the whole time.
Derek crawls over to the bars that separate his cell from Stiles’ and reaches through, not taking his eyes off the techs as they remove the boy’s body. Stiles’ fingers link through his and hold on as the boy—still in that strange between-shift, even in death—is carried past their cells.
That evening, two more teens—both boys—and a girl no more than ten or eleven are injected with the same serum. Stiles reaches for Derek through the bars as they watch. They both know that when the trial is successful, Stiles is next.
