Mona didn’t look impressed, to say the least.

“What’s is that?”, she asked, disgust trickling in her voice.

“I believe normal people call them curtains”, Keiron replied. “They are used to mask windows, preventing unwanted light and looks to go inside a room. A large amount of the population find them decorative as well.”

The woman threw him an annoyed glance. “I know what curtains are, idiot. I’m wondering why there are some on my windows.” She finally got out of her jacket, throwing it in the vague direction of the couch. “I don’t care about light, looks, and certainly not about decoration.”

“Obviously”, Keiron commented, letting his gaze pass over the naked walls and lack of generally attractiveness of the room. “But your neighbors complained. Something about you going around at all hours giving bad examples to the kids from the building across the street.”

Mona shrugged and sat - or rather, threw herself - in the couch. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“You know exactly what I’m talking about, Mon’. You came back last week all bloodied, opened up a bottle of vodka, and proceeded to drink it while dressing down to your bra. In your brightly lighted living room. Seems like the kids know where the show is going on around here.”

“So the kids across the streets are little perverts in disguise, and I’m the one being punished? How’s that fair? Maybe their parents should teach them not to spy on women through their own windows.”

Keiron paused. “Yeah, I guess they should. But the curtains are easier, and you can still open them if you want sun or to flash little kids.”

“Maybe I’ll do that.” She kept looking at the curtains, taking in the addition to her impoverished home decor. “It’s just … they’re so velvety… That’s so weird, it looks like it should be in an actual home, or something.”

She stayed silent for a while, and Keiron didn’t dare interrupt her. Trying to convince her she could start to think about the apartment as “home” would be a lost cause; she had to come to that conclusion by herself.

“At least, the color is pretty”, she finally said.

“It’s black”, Keiron remarked. “Like most of your stuffs.” He looked pointedly at her black tank top and shoes, her black jacket still half hanging from the dark grey sofa.

“Exactly”, she smiled. “I’m not a complicated lady.”

That was the closest to a thank you Keiron would have, and he hadn’t expected that much.

“I wouldn’t say that”, he replied with a grin. “You just have an unhealthy obsession with the absence of color.”

“Whatever”, she dismissed with a shake of the hand, before springing on her feet. “What do you want to eat? Chinese or Mexican?”

“Definitely not Mexican. I don’t know what they put in their meals, but my stomach doesn’t agree.”

“They’re called chili, and that’s real Mexican food, not the knock-off you find at the supermarket.” She grabbed her phone. “Chinese, then. Your usual?”

Keiron nodded while she speed-dialed the local Chinese takeaway. She smiled and turn around to peek on the corner her brand new velvety curtains.
