“Do you know Professor Argent?” Derek asks almost casually as they weave through the crowd in his parents’ large backyard.

Stiles nods. “Uh, yeah. I was paired up with Allison—his daughter—for a project in an astronomy class we had together and I studied with her a few times, so I’ve been to their house.”

“Oh. You just kind of tensed up a bit.”

Stiles’ reaction might have maybe been because it was the first time they’d seen each other since the end of the illicit, sordid affair he’d had with a much older man that was his friend’s father. He must tense up again, because Derek’s palm skims up to his waist and back down to his hip.

“It’s none of my business,” he says. “Forget I said anything.”

Stiles feels like Derek’s the kind of guys that probably values honesty above just about everything and they’re definitely getting off on the wrong foot. “I guess it’s just not a first-date kind of conversation. Much less one that should be had here.”

Derek’s expressive eyebrows go up and he nods slowly. “Okay.”

“Yeah. So… does this shindig have a cocktail hour or something?”

Derek laughs. “Might want to save the alcohol for after you meet my parents.”

Stiles leans into his side. “Really? You’re making me meet your parents on the first date. You should at least let me take the edge off a little bit.”

“You’ll be fine.”

“Damn right. Parents love me.”

Meeting Derek’s parents is a hundred percent painless—Talia has always been heavily involved in charity work for various organizations and he remembers that she’d been friends with his mother and Robert works for the city and Stiles has seen him around the station on occasion. It goes so well that he even scores a dinner invite.

“I don’t think that could’ve gone any better,” Derek tells him, procuring them a bottle of champagne from one of the cater waiters before leading him deeper into the yard and away from the guests gathered nearer to the house.

“I told you, parents love me. You shouldn’t doubt the Stiles,” Stiles said, grinning cheekily.

“You start talking about yourself in the third person, there’s going to be serious doubts,” Derek said, turning away slightly to pop the cork. He passed the bottle to Stiles, wiping his fingers on his slacks as he watched him take a drink. He took it back when Stiles offered it but, instead of taking a drink himself, he herded Stiles up against a tree and kissed him. It started as just a press of lips until Stiles’ hands clenched at the sides of Derek’s shirt and opened his mouth. “Okay,” Derek sighed after a long moment, laughing breathlessly as he dragged his nose along Stiles’ jaw, “I might overlook your use of third person if you keep kissing me like that.”

Stiles grinned again. “Stiles can totally do that.” And he did.
