Summary: He lived for the adventure of life and the animals that shared his surroundings...
After the horrifying news of the death of Steve Irwin, the Crocodile Hunter, there has been an amazing media blitz about his life, with reruns of his interviews and documentaries about him and his entire family on the Animal Planet network. I wrote this in tribute to his life and dedication. He will be missed.
The Man Became The Myth
For as long as anyone could remember, they wondered about the man. He was afraid of nothing; it wasn’t cliché to say that he laughed in the face of fear. Heights didn’t bother him, spiders were a moving toy, and snakes were fascinating. The usual phobias that plagued normal people were inconceivable to this young boy as he grew into a man.
He traveled the world, looking for excitement. He followed in his father’s footsteps to preach conservation and care of the world around him. At first, the masses ignored him, unaware of his message. He continued, ignoring the lack of response that greeted him; his heart belonged to the animals of the world and their continued existence.
It was during a presentation at an intimate gathering that he looked across the room and saw her. With eyes alight and heart thumping wildly, he walked up to her and their hearts began to beat together with the timeless rhythm of love.
In each other, they found more than companionship; they found shared passion for the animals they cared for. It was one of the stranger things that made them so perfect for each other; she understood his obsession for wildlife and shared it with him. When the black eye of the world finally turned their way to spread the message, it went like wildfire. Television became their pulpit and the world their congregation as they spread the word about the importance of protecting the various species that were in danger of being crowded out by his flock.
They went on each adventure hand in hand; nothing could separate them from each other. She developed a fearlessness of her own as she stood back and watched him wrestle crocodiles and soothe snakes in their habitats. She was used to the animals protected in zoos but he brought them into the living room of millions of homes through the all seeing eyes of the camera and made them real to his viewers. He made the world see—it was his gift, to give them unique insight into what they destroyed.
As their shared passion grew it influenced many. They shared the births of their children with the world as well, just another part of the patchwork of their lives that made them so accessible to their public. By this time, they were as big as celebrities get, easily recognizable by name and face throughout their home, the world.
Nothing slowed them down. Surgeries on a wounded knee, snakebites, childbirth—it was all a momentary pause in their crusade. They didn’t allow anything to halt their driving force. Through slings and arrows they continued, although the world didn’t understand their free and easy way with the animals they were familiar with. They taught their children to have a healthy respect for the wild animals that surrounded their home and it was too much for the public to understand. They turned their backs on the wildlife messiah and made his life seem trite and dangerous.
He had always said that the only thing that would ever stop him from preaching would be to hand the reins to his children; he had no idea of the future to come or the love that would take him down. Animals were the crazy glue that held his life together and one became the solvent that made it fly apart.
His message will continue, of that there is no doubt. However, his presence, his sheer tenacity and full-on enthusiasm for what he loved will be missed.
