~*~*~

Lis settled where she'd collapsed, jaw nestled in the crook where Michael's shoulder met his neck, his sweat-damp hair tickling her nose, their legs tangled together, her left arm tucked between their chests, while her right traced along his ribs feeling as his breath became slow and even and hers followed. She wondered in awe, not for the first time, how perfectly they fit. It had taken time, getting to know one another well enough for their personalities to mesh, to become not just Lis and Michael, but LisandMichael, but physically they had always fit together like pieces of a jigsaw puzzle, comfortable and easy in each other's space.

They'd carved out spaces for the two of them over the years: their favorite hiking trail along the Eno, the corner table at 518, the Botanical Garden's Fairy Garden… all spaces special to them, but that they shared with the rest of the world, or at least a small subset of it. The backyard was theirs, bought and… well, mortgaged, planned and planted. They'd set the boards of the privacy fence together, hiding away their oasis until the now towering red cedars had grown tall enough to block out neighbor's prying eyes. Lis had laid the flagstones for the patio, and Michael's wood-working skills had gotten a stretch as he built the low table and a couple of chaises, plus the bench over by his herb patch.

He'd made the chaises wider than usual, comfortable for two, if they were comfortable with each other, and solid, for which Lis was very grateful right about then. The past hour or so would have been not nearly as pleasant if they'd crashed to the stone floor in the middle of their… exertions. Lis had added thick cushions covered in blue duck just the color of Michael's eyes, and the overall effect was so cozy, they'd been known to sleep under the stars some clear spring nights. Not that this was spring, or that they'd been doing any sleeping, even though… if they didn't move soon, Lis was likely to doze off right as she was. Even if she was starting to get goosebumps as the autumn chill – no, not autumn, not any more, even if winter in the Carolinas was warmer than autumn a lot of places – as the winter chill teased her sweat-laced skin.

Michael shrugged his shoulder, a gentle nudge that didn't so much interrupt Lis' vaguely philosophical post-coital bliss as add to it. "Hey, you still with me, darlin'?"

"Mm-hmm. Just thinking."

"Thinking? You're doing better than me, then. Not sure I can rub two brain cells together just yet, let alone have an actual thought. What got into you tonight?"

Lis shifted, tucking her head under his chin and pulling his hand under hers, but the low laughter belied the shyness of her posture.

"I'm pretty sure you did. Unless I missed something."

Michael's laugh was louder, and the sound filled her with… something. She lacked the words to name the feeling that flowed over and through her. "Yeah, I guess I did. But that's not what I meant, and you know it."

"What? I can't spend a little quality time with my guy when the mood strikes?"

Lis rolled her hips slowly, not wanting him to slip from her while she made her point.

He pulled her closer, even though that seemed impossible, his palm pressing at the small of her back while his thumb traced along her spine in a way that never failed to curl her toes. Apparently Lis wasn’t the only one who could make a point.

"Anytime, anyplace, anyway… unless you got something better to do."

"Nope. Not a thing. There's nowhere I'd rather be than here, with you, like this."

Because it was their little corner of the world, and there they fit.

And well… the sex was really hot.
