they definitely found out in season one - i was rewatching it recently because i was bored, and after asylum (in scarecrow, i think, when john first calls the boys) john tells sam on the phone that he's on the trail of the thing that killed mary and that it's a demon. i'm pretty sure that's the first time he and dean learn that, and john clearly just learned it.
