Title: Her insanity
Fandom: LOST
Prompt: Castaway
Warnings: none.
Rating: Uhm... G, I think.
Summary: Rousseau meets a strange man. Stranger than herself. They exchange a few thoughts about madness.
AN: I'm not exactly proud of this fic, but it's been running around my head for a while now and the prompt 'castaway' just begged to be used here ;) (Plus, it's a Lost fic! The irony of that one just can't go amiss :P)

The man does not stop working even when the heavy, angry rains fall, when the weather sends downpours that make the already difficult life of the castaways even more complicated. He doesn’t seem to mind the large, cold raindrops, nor does he look disturbed by the chilly wind. On the contrary watching the man, one can get the feeling that he is the one who stops the rain from falling freely and slows the wind down with his resolve and determination to finish the job.

This is why Danielle Rousseau stands at the edge of the clearing, far enough to keep herself hidden, but close enough to watch the island of serenity in the ocean of her own emotions: a tall, bulky black man in a torn shirt that a few plane crashes earlier most probably used to be white, methodically cutting long pieces of bamboo and putting them away into a pile to his left. The sight fascinates her nearly as much as listening to the music box Sayid repaired for her. The difference’s that she’s not touched or deep in memories, she just can’t stop staring. There’s something odd and unusual about him.

‘Hello,’ he says suddenly, without turning around or stopping his lumberjack job. ‘I am Mr Eko. Who are you?’

Danielle considers turning around and leaving, but in that exact moment he looks at her with a calmness she wouldn’t expect in one of the Oceanic 815 survivors; they always seem to be so anxious and nervous. With the notable exception of Hurley, maybe. Instead of retreating, she comes closer and answers.

‘I’m Rousseau. A friend of Sayid.’

‘Why are you looking at me, Rousseau?’

‘Because you don’t fit to the rest of them.’

‘That is true. Neither do you.’

She pauses before replying. ‘That’s because they reject me. Your friends think I’m crazy.’

‘They are not my friends. And everyone is crazy.’

‘I’m saner than anyone on this island. I’m just a little more scared. That’s not insanity’

‘Yes, it is. You are here.’

Mr Eko stops cutting the bamboo and starts picking it up. There’s more of it than he can carry and Danielle surprises herself with bending down to help him carry the rest. They walk towards the beach in silence and she wonders why he puts himself in the same group as the rest of this oblivious madhouse. She doesn’t trust his words, because words are the sole reason of insanity for most people. Robert’s mental instability started with the words ‘I think I’m dying, too, Danielle’. Her own sanity came close to ending the day the Others kidnapped Alex. But she lived through it. And she feels free enough to do the right thing.

Where does it really put her?

They reach the higher part of the dunes, where that selfish Brit hides under the trees, near something Eko is obviously trying to build.

‘Eko, where the hell were you? And what’s the demented baby snatcher doing here?’, Charlie gets predictably angry when he sees Danielle. She doesn’t care.

‘Rousseau is helping us build the church.’ Eko’s explanation stuns both Danielle and Charlie.

‘Why am I helping you build a church?’ she finally asks, while Charlie sputters basically the same question, only with a lot more ‘bloody’ and ‘hell’ in between.

‘Because you want to know what exactly insanity is.’ And without another word Eko picks up the work he had ceased before he went to search for more material.

‘That’s not true,’ Rousseau says. She's curious about his insanity, though. So she helps them this time, before she leaves.

SQUEEE! I don't like Lost, haven't watched the show, and through this, I could really feel the characters.

The reason I'm squeeing, however, is that you wrote in! You did awesome! I absolutely loved it!

Really, never seen Rousseau that much in character, when the fic wasn't about Alex.
*bows*
Amazing.

I love the idea of Rousseau and Eko meeting, and especially that she would help build the church. Very, very original idea!
