Death Note summary: Death Note is a Japanese manga that revolves around the central character Yagami Light. Light is a brilliant, but bored, college bound student who desires to follow his father's foot steps and enter the police force. One day, he finds a Death Note dropped by a shinigami (god of death) and discovers that he can kill people simply by writing down their names and picturing their faces. Instead of being afraid, Light seizes the opportunity to create a uptopia and uses the book, as Kira ('engrish' for killer), to kill those he judges evil.

L, a strange but equally brilliant detective, sets out to capture Kira. He quickly determines that Light is the most likely candidate and an epic game of cat and mouse with winner takes all stakes erupts between them. During one part of the series, Light gives up his memories of the Death Note. L, still determined to prove that Light is Kira, first imprisons Light for months, and then insists that the two remain chained together until L is satisfied otherwise.

As always, feedback is welcome and appreciated.

Some nights, L pretended to sleep so that Light-kun would rest. If the detective kept his breathing even for long enough, the younger boy would always fall asleep, lulled by the repetitive whispering breaths that escaped L’s lips.

These nights were almost always preceded by moments of passion that lingered in L’s mind far longer than they did in Light’s. This was why L remained awake – to consider what he was doing. On a purely intellectual level, he knew that sleeping with his chief suspect was a bad idea. It compromised his ability to remain objective and neutral. That thought always made L smile bitterly. When it came to Yagami Light, he had lost objectivity and neutrality long ago.

Light was Kira. It was the only explanation that fit – and to borrow an English expression, L had learned before that if it quacked like a duck…

Only, the knowledge that he was sleeping with a murderer didn’t make it easier for L to keep an emotional distance from Light. He didn’t like that thought; that fact scared him. He had never had problems remaining emotionally detached from anyone. In fact, L had trouble making friends. He had trouble caring about people other than as objects that could help or hinder him in his plans.

There were others that had earned a place in L’s life – Mello, Near, Matt; there were those that L genuinely cared for enough to wish them well – Watari, Roger; there were nameless strangers who had provided L with the comforts of the flesh when he desired that and those who offered the illusion of friendship when he desired companionship.

But Yagami Light was the only person who had ever captured L’s imagination and teased him with the thoughts of what might have been if…

… if they had met under different circumstances.

… if they had the hope of a genuine future.

… if Light wasn’t the worst serial killer the world had ever known.

Sighing, L rolled on his side and studied the sleeping brunette. Light’s eyes were closed, his breathing deep and peaceful. He slept with his free hand under his head, his hand cradling his face. The hand that bore the chain was stretched towards L. He looked serene.

These hours, in the middle of the night, made L wish that he could suspend his disbelief. They made him dream the possibility that Light was innocent, as the youth proclaimed. They teased him with the hope that there might be something more between him and Light than endless mind games and lies.

Light sighed in his sleep and rolled onto his back. The blanket slipped down and L reached out to pull it up again. Then he brushed his hand over Light’s forehead and pushed his hair gently to the side.

Light smiled in his sleep and turned his face so that L caressed his cheek. L held his breath and then, very slowly, leaned forward and pressed a chaste kiss to Light’s lips.

He wanted to believe in Light. The problem was… he didn’t.
