Summary: More on my life after people.

I relaxed when the little bump went away. I cursed as I discovered it disappeared after only a few hours.
A bug bite.
Still shivering in terror, I wondered the streets at night, looking up at the stars that had never been so bright. Idly, I pointed to Orion, then the Big Dipper, as the only two constellations I recognized. I think I remember Draco as well, but I couldn’t be sure.
Suddenly, tears were blurring my vision and my knees gave way and I sat in the middle of the street, crying my eyes out.
Within moments, my chest hurt and my face was hot to the touch, but I couldn’t stop crying, couldn’t stop the sobs that were ripped from my lips. I wanted to go home, was my only thought, but where was home now?
Everybody was dead and nothing worked. It would all be better if I was dead too, right? Slowly crawling to my feet and dusting off the gravel from the road, I began walking my bike back to my house. What else was there to do?
Once home, I sat on the front step and listened to the night bugs, lightly fanning myself with an envelope from a neighbor’s mailbox. Even the nights were boiling, with the heat and river so close. Sweat poured down between my shoulder blades and along side my nose. It had never been this bad before.
Before.
I huffed a strained laugh and wondered just what we humans had done to the world.
A meow drew my attention to my window where my cat was perched, eyeing my hungrily. I smiled and entered and she jumped from the window to twine about my legs.
“Hungry, babe?”
My only response was another meow and her galloping off to the kitchen. I followed and set aside the mail, searching for the dry cat food that was quickly running low. As she ate, I knelt beside her and pet her long fur, smiling at her strange purring and growling noises.
A yawn surprised me, and I left the kitchen for my bed room, shrugging out of the clothes I had dirtied and searching for something clean. I guess I was going to have to learn to wash with a washing board soon, if I wanted clean somethings in the future.
Settling on thin pajama pants and a tank, I reentered the kitchen and poked around for something to eat that didn’t require cooking.
Rather hard, as everything I had needed either fire or microwave. I found cookies hidden away on top of my fridge and decided that was as good as it was going to get. I perched on the counter top and nibbled away until my eye was caught by the white envelope all but glowing in the moon light.
I dusted crumbs off my hands and reached for the paper, thinking that tomorrow I was going to find myself a barrel and begin making a fire every night. That way I could cook something and warm water for a bath.
A warm bath, heaven never sounded so good.
Carefully tearing off one side of the envelope, I patted out the contents, smiling when the picture of a beach at sunset greeted me.
A brochure for a vacation at Seychelles Islands. Someone had hoped for a bright future.
I flipped through the colorful pages and gave a start when my cat was suddenly in my arms, purring away. I ruffled her fur and tossed the booklet aside. She meowed up at me, kneading her clawless paws in my leg, her whole body rumbling with her motor.
I suppose this was my paradise. I hugged her close, much to her dismay, rubbing my cheek against her fuzzy head and had to fight to hold back tears.
