Prompt# 115 - Cavort - What’s To Do? - Tekia - original

Title: What’s To Do?
Fandom: Original
Prompt: Cavort
Warnings: none
Rating: G
Summary: Continuation from the last prompt.

Boredom was the bane of my existence.
I laid on the sidewalk beside the old iron rail that blocked my from tumbling into the rushing muddy river to my left. My feet rocked from side to side and I shielded my eyes from the annoying sun, letting it bake me. If anything, I’ll finally have that sweet tan I’ve always wanted. Sighing, I closed my eyes and simply listened to the sounds of the river and birds overhead.
Growing only more irritated, I pushed myself up onto my hands and looked around, allowing time for my eyes to adjust from gazing up at the sun. The wind had picked up and was tugging at my mangy curls as the waves of the river became tipped in white. Narrowing my eyes, I gained my feet and leaned far out over the rail.
I was always afraid of doing this, fearing that my glasses would fall off and disappear into the murky depths. Even now, I paid more attention to my glasses rather than the sight of the brown water lapping at the cement under me. Backing up, I shoved the glasses up my nose and looked out at the numerous birds floating like so much fluff in the air.
“I’m bored,” I said to no one, myself. I puffed out my cheeks, then turned away from the river once again. I tapped my hands on my legs, beating out a random tune that I couldn’t keep before shoving away and walking toward the main street.
Then a thought came to me and I raced to my bike, kicking the kick stand and hopping on and peddling away. Where I wanted to go was across town, but I think it would be worth the effort.
I took many short breaks and panted in the heat, but doggedly continued on. I dodged as many hills as I could on this town built on hills, and rode on the sidewalk, under the shade of trees. Once, I turned the wheel too sharply and nearly crashed the bike on a bump in the cement. Giggling, I straightened the bike and moved on. Nearly an hour later, given as many rests I took, I arrived at my destination.
The doors were locked, but I easily scaled the wire fence surrounding the back.
The pool was as clear as I had expected. It hadn’t been long enough for any muck to gather, nor would any bugs lay their eggs in the chlorine infested water. Grinning, I pulled off all my clothes and jumped into the water. The water went over my head with a chill that I welcomed after the heat of the summer.
When I surfaced, I lay on my back, floating in the water, my eyes closed and for the first time, I didn’t worry about bumping into anybody. I arched my arms over my head, cutting through the water with well practiced strokes. I loved swimming. I loved the feel of water, and the cool refreshing it always brought to the hottest of days. I loved being around other people in the pool.
Dropping my feet to the bottom of the pool, I rubbed at my eyes and pulled off my glasses to shake water droplets from the lenses. Looking around me, I wondered what I was supposed to do now.
The pool wasn’t going to last forever. Already the heat of the summer had taken it’s toll and the water level had lowered remarkably. When winter came, it was going to freeze, but before that, fall would see to it that leaves cluttered the water.
Ducking back into the water, I swam to the deep end and pulled myself out to jump off the diving board.
Before, I had never done so, because I had always been embarrassed by the strange way my body always cavorted in the air. I had never learned how to properly dive, and thus leaped off the board and splashed into the water, holding my nose, like a child still.
Gasping for breath, I laughed and swam to the edge to do it again. After all, there was nobody to mock me, or to wait for.
