Author’s Notes : So this is supposed to be a response to a challenge at Route 66: Destination Sunnydale but truthfully it doesn’t and won’t fit the challenge at all. It is unbeta’d because so all mistakes are mine and please point out any you find. Enjoy and let me know what you think of this.

I've become much too good at being invincible
I'm an expert at play it safe, and keep it cool
But I swear this isn't who I'm meant to be
I refuse to let my life roll all over me...

Chapter 1 Safe

Hannibal King glared at the toaster noting morosely the smoke that curled out of the top and the tips of the burnt pieces of bread. He crossed his arms muscles rippling and grunted pouting with all the skill of a five year old.

“You tried to make breakfast again?” an amused voice asked and he turned to see Abby leaning against the doorway a smile on her lips. She was in her mid thirties but didn’t look it. Neither of them did.

Hunting vampires tended to keep a person looking young in a way no wrinkle cream could ever do.

“That thing is fucking broke.” He glowered tossing it one more glare.

A delicate hand plucked out the burnt pieces tossing them into the trash and the small blond did a spin as she grabbed the bread and put in two more pieces pulling down the button. She gave King a sunny smile “It’s not broken,” leaning forward to press a quick kiss to his check “you’re just slow.”

She plopped herself down on one of the stools grinning.

King rolled his eyes his hand squeezing her shoulder affectionately as he went to stand beside Abby. His arm slipped around her waist and she leaned against him her voice soft but firm “Zo we won’t be here when you get home so you know the drill, lock the doors and set the alarms.”

Zoe Summerfield rolled her eyes “Yes Mom,” and it wasn’t just a term of sarcasm. She slipped between that and Aunt Abby for the woman that was raising her. King had always been Dad though; she didn’t have any memories of any other father.

“So what’s the baddie? Vampires? Familiars?” the toast popped perfectly golden and she grabbed it spreading the jam as she watched her parent’s curiosity her green eyes bright.

King smirked “We got word of a nest setting up downtown; we’re going to clean those bloodsucking fuckers out before they have a chance to hang some curtains and get cozy.”

Zoe returned his grin nodding “Cool.”

Abby resisted the urge to roll her eyes and prompted “So…?”

The fifteen year-old smiled “So, I stay inside with the doors locked and the alarm set.”

Zoe could protect herself but only to a certain extent. She could handle the weapons and throw down with the best of them but she was still young and didn’t have the intense training or experience that the Night-Stalkers did.

She was also kept pretty close to home and protected; her mother’s death at the hands of Drake had shaken everybody and made them paranoid when it came to her.

She was fine with that.

She had no desire to play super chick.

She didn’t want a life playing hide and seek with vampires and any other of the nasty things in the world.

She watched as her parents prepared, her Dad stuffing silver stakes and UV darts in different cases all his body and her Mom reaching for her specialized bow with one hand and Zoe’s backpack with the other. Finishing her toast Zoe accepted her bag slipping it on one shoulder and smiled when her Dad’s arm fell over her shoulders as they followed her Mom to the car.

While her parents made the world a safer place from bloodsucking monsters she had to go to school and figure out how not to sleep during History.

Zoe Elizabeth Anne Summerfield liked her normal life, she really did.
