Title: Behind the Flames - Chapter 2: The Meaning of All Things - Excerpt
Prompt: Dreamworld
Warnings: none
Rating: G
Summary: Sophia has a dream that is all too real.

The morning sun rose outside the castle walls, unknown to those deep inside the mountain and with it a spattering of chilled rain, making the whole of the castle feel damp and the cold run through to the bone. Sitting up, she could not remember why she had laid in her bed in the first place, nor had she remembered dozing off. The light from her chrysalis fought with the darkness, trying its hardest to blot it out and illuminate the small room. As soon as the covers were off, she shivered and reached for her woolen robe, pulling it over her head so as to chase away the cold.

The halls were oddly silent, and she could not tell if she had slept into the night, or woke too early in the day. Slipping out of her room, she looked around the hall, searching the darkness punctuated by the lights of the chrysalis for any soul within. There seemed to be no one. She glanced back into her room and saw that Yalna's bed was empty. Perhaps she had woken late into the morning and everyone was out doing their daily chores or studying their magics.

Unsure, she walked slowly and quietly through the Novitiate halls toward that of the Great Hall, hoping that someone would find her along the way and let her know the time of day. She passed a few doors, stopping only when she heard a soft whimper. It was the young girl from the other day, when it had been announced what the messenger had told the High Council.

"Shh, sweetling," Sophia said softly, kneeling down and putting her hand on the child's shoulder. "What is the matter?"

The child did not answer, but continued to cry, unabated, seemingly ignoring Sophia's presence. "Is something wrong?" she tried again. Still, no reaction. Standing, Sophia backed away slowly, facing the child, unsure of what to make of the encounter.

Suddenly the girl stood and began screaming a scream so loud that Sophia had to put her hands over her ears. She looked where the young one was pointing to see the ceiling of the hall begin to collapse over her head. She too screamed and ducked down to the ground, covering her head with her hands.

However, nothing came. Surely by now it would have crushed her and killed her. Daring a peek, she looked over her arm to see the stone of the floor in an arch over her head. Immediately thankful of High Magi Hesaan, Sophia nearly cried out his name.

"Hesaan! Oh, thank the elements you were here to stop this," Sophia gushed, unable to contain her gratitude over the safety of her life. However, after a few silent moments, there was no answer, so she tried again. "Hesaan, could you please move the debris so that I may get out of here?"

Silence. Panic began to set in and she closed her eyes, hoping that soon, someone would come, that that young girl had not been crushed and had gone to get help. Was it her imagination, or was the air running short in there. Her skin felt hot and there was sweat on her brow. She still had on her woolen robe, but there was not room enough to remove it. If she was not released from her stone prison soon, it was likely she would pass out.

"Hesaan! Anyone! Please, help me!" Sohpia cried out again. She pushed at the stones, willing them to move so that she could at least have air, if not an escape.

Suddenly, the sound of shifting stones echoed in her little chamber. She was giddy with relief at finally having someone hear her and help her get herself out. Pushing on another stone, she found it moved easily, almost too easily as she had not even set her hands on it. Wondering at this, she went to push another rock, only to have it gently roll down the pile away from her. Surely Hesaan was somewhere, moving these large stones for her. However, looking out the small hole, she could see no one in the hall around her. Perhaps, she reasoned, they were behind her. Turning in the small area, she moved to push another stone. It too moved easily and without any physical aid on her part.

Sophia let her hands fall to her side as she knelt on the floor and looked to another stone. "Move," she whispered in the small area. It did, rolling just as softly as the other had.

Stone after stone, Sophia willed to move, and it did without hesitation. Able to climb through now, she did, only to find herself standing in the hall again, not a piece of rubble in sight. The young girl that had warned her stood before her, her eyes wide and dry, looking on in amazement.
