Will Atherton brought his son to a new development in the pristine woods of Washington State, thinking it was a great place to live. But there is something in the woods. Something watching. Something dark. Even the reassurances of soft-spoken and confident Sheriff Liam Roarke can't chase away Will's growing awareness of something that doesn't want he or his son or anyone else to live on the mountain.

Previously: "Royce needs a bath, Connor," Will said, wrinkling his nose at the old blanket they'd used to transport the puppy with. "And I think we better wash that blanket."

Holding the puppy carefully, Connor climbed out of their SUV. Will stretched over to Connor's seat and gingerly removed the soiled blanket. He had a feeling he'd be doing a lot of cleaning up in future, but it was worth it to see his son so happy--

"...Dad?"

Will stiffened at the uncertainty and fear in his son's voice. He dropped the blanket and sprinted to his son's side.

A familiar big man slouched in the alcove by the front door, giving Connor a charming smile. "Hey, kid, you miss me?"

"No," Connor growled.

Will felt like someone had punched him in the chest.

Adam.

One further note. This chapter has two tarot spreads worked in it. I've done other pieces here and there with them as well, but I don't think I've ever mentioned that I actually throw the spreads when I need one in a story. Thus, what is encountered below is what I got, and I was both forced to go with the cards drawn (I got lucky) and a bit impressed with them as well. Regarding that, on reworking the chapter in light of Declan's retelling of SA and the new information I have from that now, I must say I never expected St. Michael to have just as much meaning as he does. In truth, I really did throw both spreads well before I began Declan's version...

This chapter has been moved, along with all prior chapters, to my LJ, where they're located in chronological order in the IR section of my memories.
