Summary: word count: 711 Temuji sets his plans into motion.
Viljo blinked several times as he absorbed the information. Very slowly he lowered himself to the bench once again and his face, still red from his bout of crying, drained of color. He swallowed hard and had to lick his lips several times before he found his voice.
“Will he come for me now that Davin’s gone?”
“Undoubtedly.”
Viljo started to shake. He clenched his hands in his lap and was suddenly a completely different person. All emotion was wiped from his features and his perpetual smile was gone. Worried, Temuji narrowed his eyes at him.
“Viljo?”
He gave a start and looked at Temuji. “We will leave soon?” Was that hope in his voice? Temuji nodded and stood. “Have the maids pack what you will take with you. I have to be somewhere, and when I return, we’ll leave.”
Viljo stood with him and wrung his hands. “Do you have to leave?”
Temuji put his hand on his shoulder. “Don’t worry. I’ve had a taste of his magic and can now scent him. He’s nowhere near here.”
Viljo shrugged off his hand. His brow curved down in a frown. “He killed Davin without being near. How is that supposed to comfort me?” He quickly turned on his heel and raced back into the house.
Flummoxed, Temuji watched him go. Didn’t he realize Dago needed him alive? Or was that what he feared? Shaking his head, Temuji followed him into the house, seeking out the housekeeper.
He found her directing the other staff, one hand on her hip, the other pointing and her eyes red. He put his hand to her elbow and motioned for the butler to take over. She followed him, her feet heavy, and sighed.
“I’m so scared for them all. Have you met his sister?”
Temuji grimaced. He had, and known her well. “A evil sort of woman, I hear.”
The housekeeper nodded. “She is. A true noble, if you will. So far above the rest of us,” she said with no little contempt.
Temuji nodded, paying her little heed as he moved her further away from the rest of the staff. Finally he had her back out in the garden. He pushed her down onto the bench and sat beside her.
She sank down gratefully and rubbed her shoulder. “There’s so much to do, yet. I thought I was ready for this.”
“Nobody ever is. Have one of your girls take over. Surely you have an understudy.”
He rubbed his hands together, gathering magic in his palms. She looked up at the sky, still spitting gentle rain on them, still grey. She didn’t see the magic powering up beside her and didn’t feel when he tied the magic to her.
“I do, and I’ll have to prepare her for our departure.”
“Today.”
She turned to gape at him. “Impossible.”
“We leave today. Don’t argue.”
She stood and Temuji quickly released his hold on the magic. She put her hands to her hips and glared down at him. “I will! You’re demanding the impossible. There are a hundred things to do. For you, too.”
He arched a brow. “Such as?”
“You have papers to sign, people to see. The body to bury!”
“I’ll leave that to his sister.”
She looked lost for words as she stared down at him and he smiled. That pushed her past her limit She struck out at him but he caught her hand before she could connect. Then she growled. He blinked in surprise and laughed outright.
Jerking her hand away, she turned on her heel and started to march away. He tilted his head to one side, watching her walk away. That was the second time today, he thought with a smile.
“Be ready when I return.”
She spat a foul word that he didn’t think she would know back at him and he laughed once again.
So be it, but it had to be done.
Then he brought one finger up, swinging it back and forth and felt the tug of the magic he’d place on her. As he had said before, he was going to use her. For now, that protection charm should hold back the magic that had assaulted Davin, and protect the boy. Humans were easy tools.
