When I see your smile
Tears run down my face I can't replace
And now that I'm stronger I've figured out
How this world turns cold and breaks through my soul
And I know I'll find deep inside me I can be the one
“How are they?” Cole asked Phoebe softly, slipping his arm around her waist as they walked side by side down the hallway. She was exhausted, letting herself lean heavily against him, her eyes gritty from lack of sleep and her throat sore from calling for Leo.
“They’ll be okay. Piper got the worst of it. Leo’s with her now and Prue is sleeping,” Phoebe confided to him, trying to smile but failing. Her sisters were safe now but she could still see them lying on the floor, covered in blood and burns. The attack had come out of nowhere; more than a dozen robed demons had shimmered in and attacked.
The only reason Phoebe hadn’t been hurt was because Prue had pushed her out of the way and into a wall. When she had managed to get to her feet, she had screamed for Leo and Cole had been close behind the Whitelighter’s orbs, energy balls flying, and everything had been lost in a sea of fighting and healing.
Prue and Piper had been seriously hurt; all Phoebe had gotten was a cut on her arm that she had told Leo not to heal. She wanted him to focus on her sisters and to be there for Piper. She would be okay.
“What about you?” Cole asked her softly, concern in his voice and there was a small cut by his eye. It was already healing. He followed her into the attic, still staying close to her, a warm hand at the small of her back.
“I’ll be fine.” She gave him a forced smile, ignoring the way her shoulder throbbed from the impact with the wall. She was already moving to the Book of Shadows, trying to remember if she had seen anything like the demons that had attacked them.
Cole watched her, a genuine smile touching his lips. “You know, you don’t have to look in there. I know a thing or two about demons.” The last bit held a trace of irony to it considering that fact that he was a half-demon. A fact that he would never forget, that he couldn’t forget. He lived with it each day, he felt it inside him, stirring. The darkest part of his human nature couldn’t even measure up to the demon half in him.
It went beyond darkness, beyond malevolence, it was twisted and ugly and somehow Phoebe still loved him though, she loved him despite that darkest part of his soul. That was why he fought against it, even when he could feel it racing through his veins, seductive and dark.
Tempting.
For her he fought that temptation. For her he embraced his human half. His human half had learned to care for her family, to care for the innocents, to care for the battle against evil. Both sides of him however had grown to love her.
She looked up from the book a small, real smile touching her lips “Yeah, I know. So you can tell me what you what you know while I find a way to track and vanquish them.”
He came to stand across from her watching as she flipped through the book looking up to see if he had anything to say.
The smile he gave her was a bit dimmer than the previous one as he told her “They are followers of Allocer, one of the nastier demons allied with the Source. I’ve meet him, he’s a real piece of work, and he has legions of demons at his command. Like the ones that attacked you and your sisters. My guess is he is trying to gain favor with the Source and what better way to do that then to take out the Charmed Ones?”
People stopped flipping through the book, stopping on a page that showed a gnarled figure with dark hair and holding the symbol that had been burnt on the demons foreheads. “Is this him?”
Cole leaned forward, nodding as he saw the familiar figure he had had the displeasure of meeting once. “Yes, like I said he’s a real piece of work. But not too high up power wise.”
“Apparently not,” Phoebe read the passage, grabbing the notebook and pen they kept by the book and began copying down the vanquishing potion, “doesn’t even need a Power of Three spell. I should be able to take care of this myself.”
“No you won’t.” Cole grabbed the paper from her hand as she finished writing. “You have me,” he told her firmly, curving her body around him.
She looked up at him, her eyes hard with determination, and grinned. “I do, don’t I? Let’s go kill us a demon then, honey.”
He returned the grin and pulled her tighter against him, leaning down to press a light kiss to her lips, the kiss deepening as her lips pressed tightly against his and moved. Her hand slipped around his waist, nails digging slightly into his back and she pulled away slowly, her entire being somehow steadier and stronger.
“Okay.” He smiled softly, leaning down to press another quick kiss against her lips. She made him strong, made him human. With her, the demon half didn’t matter as much. She made it easier for him to fight against his darker urgings. She gave him something to fight for, a light to follow when all he had ever seen was the darkness.
And he would do the same for her. He would stand beside her, fight beside her, love and live beside her. He would remind her that while her powers were weaker than her sisters, she was so much stronger than they could imagine.
Pulling her closer, he breathed in deeply when he felt her lay her head on his chest, trusting him. He would live up to that trust. Letting himself smile, letting himself be happy, he shimmered them down to the kitchen ignoring the dark pull on his demon when he used his powers. They had a potion to make and a demon to vanquish. They didn’t have time for him to break down. She needed him strong and he needed her.
I will never let you fall
I'll stand up with you forever
I'll be there for you through it all
Even if saving you sends me to heaven
