Title: The Case Beyond the Case Part II
Fandom: Supernatural
Prompt: Stalemate
Warnings: None
Rating: PG-13
Summary: Sam and Dean get a call on a case that is not nearly as simple as it starts out.

Part One

It turned out that Jaime’s presence greatly speeded their efforts to get rid of the poltergeist, even though it meant that they couldn’t use the EMF for advanced warning. But she was almost as fast at knowing when the poltergeist was active, and she could intervene to stop whatever it was throwing at them. Dean may have glared and grumbled, but Sam sure appreciated her efforts as she stopped bits of broken vase from flying at him.

Afterwards, Sam and Dean sat at the kitchen table, patching up their minor injuries up as Jaime paced around, exclaiming over the damage done to her house.

“I can’t believe it broke these dishes! They belonged to my mother, and they’ve been in her family for three generations!” she exclaimed, poking through the debris in front of the china cabinet for unbroken dishes.

Dean gave Sam a significant look, although he didn’t say anything. Sam sighed.

“Jaime,” he reluctantly began.

Jaime stood suddenly and faced them. “Don’t,” she said, “Don’t start. I called you for help with a poltergeist, and it’s gone now. Case closed.”

“But you’re still here,” Dean said, eyes steady on her. “And you’re a ghost.”

“I’m not hurting anyone!” she said. “What harm am I doing anything by staying here?”

“You’re not supposed to be here,” Dean retorted. “You’re probably disturbing the Force or something!”

“Well you can’t just torch an innocent spirit!” she flung back.

“Well I can’t just leave you here either!” he said. They glared at each other. Stalemate.

Sam cleared his throat; they both turned to stare at him, and he shifted uncomfortably. “Jaime, why are you here?” he asked gently.

She snorted – and somewhere in the back of his mind, Sam laughed at the sight of a spirit snorting – and said, “I told you, this is my house!”

“No, I know,” Sam assured her, “But…it takes a lot of emotion to stay around as a ghost. That’s why not everyone becomes one. So what about this house do you care about that much?”

“Oh.” Jaime seemed to think about that, coming to sit down on a chair across the table from them. “I guess…I just…” She sighed. “Mom and Dad wanted to sell the farm, everything, and move to Florida. I didn’t care so much about the fields and everything, but…this was my home. I wanted to move back here after college. But they could get a better price for selling the whole thing. We fought. Eventually they agreed not to sell the house, but…right after…”

“You died,” Sam hazarded when she didn’t immediately go on.

She nodded. “Drunk driver.”

“Ouch,” Dean said. For the first time since learning she was a ghost, he didn’t seem antagonistic towards her.

Jaime shrugged. “I don’t really remember much of it. Just waking up here. Mom and Dad went down the Florida, but I was able to just…keep the house from selling.” She reached out and touched the table centerpiece. “I like keeping it up. It’s mine. And I didn’t want to have fought with my parents for nothing.” A tear rolled down her cheek.

This time Sam shot Dean a significant glance, silently asking him what he expected Sam to do with this, and if Dean really wanted to take on this aspect of the case.

Dean, for once, had nothing to say.

Awww! Poor thing. I hope she moves on instead of sticking around to become a vengeful spirit.
