She moved through the house, silent, deadly, her presence barely stirring the air around her as she crept up the stairs. He still felt her though, she was as much of a hunter as he was, the night embraced her as well. But she was still human, she still breathed, and her heart still beat.

He could hear it beat; he could smell the life on her, feel the blood moving through her veins.

“You know it’s not nice to break into someone’s home. In fact, I think it’s illegal.”

Her body tensed and she turned, her eyes narrowed and her blonde hair brushed back into a ponytail. He had learned that she liked to tease. She was one of the few creatures in the world powerful enough to flaunt her throat and not get it ripped out.

“Really.” She crossed her arms leaning against the smooth wood of the wall. “Never stopped you.”

Damon stepped closer to her, reaching forward to brush a strand of hair from her bangs out of her eyes. “But people practically invite me in.” She didn’t even flinch, her smile matching his, just as sharp. He could twist her neck; break the bones without a second thought, normally. But there was nothing normal about her and he was smart enough to know that the second he got his hands around her throat, he would find himself on the ground.

“Stupid people.”

“What are you doing, Buffy?” His voice was softer, but the teasing was gone.

“What, I can’t stop in to say hi to an old friend?”

“Usually people call in advance.” He pinned her with a hard stare, letting her see every bit of the predator, the killer that was inside him. She knew what he was, he wasn’t like his brother. He fully embraced the monster inside.

“A little birdie told me the Salvatore boys were back in Mystic Falls and then people started dying.” Her words came out as an accusation, and she wasn’t too far off the mark. Vampires come to town, people are found dead with their throats shredded. So far, the police were going with a wild animal.

“You know Stefan isn’t responsible.” And his brother wasn’t, much to Damon’s annoyance, the other vampire was on a ‘no human blood” diet that was absolutely boring.

“How am I supposed to know that? Last time I saw you two, he looked ready to snap,” she bit out, her hand clenching into a fist at her side and he stepped back slightly. He was a monster, not an idiot, and he didn’t feel like getting hit by a girl.

“I pushed him a little hard then, he’s gotten himself under control again.” That had been ten years ago. She had been younger, but already a legend and Damon had been doing his best to make his brother reconsider his whole humanity matters stance. He had been trying to remind him of what they were, of what they could do, and it had been working.

Stefan had been so close to feeding off of Buffy’s brat of a little sister. Only the Slayer and Stefan’s own self-hatred had kept it from happening. He had been making good progress with Stefan, had pushed him so far beyond violence and pain that he had lashed out at the first warm living body thrust in his direction.

That had been the last time he had seen his brother until now. Suffice to say Stefan hadn’t been too pleased and had been avoiding him since. It had hurt his feelings a bit, or would have, if he admitted to having any. He would admit that, without his brother to torment, he had been a bit bored. Stefan was a prude but he made death interesting.

“Almost sounds like you care about him.” It wasn’t a question, she knew. He hated his brother and would do his best to make sure he suffered for the rest of their existence but he was still his brother, he was all he had left in this world, a constant that would never change.

“He’s my brother, you don’t go near him.” She was a hunter, she killed their kind. She was born to do it and Damon wouldn’t let her end his brother. He would decide when and how Stefan died, and it would be by his hand.

“You think you can stop me?” she challenged coldly.

He smirked. “I guess we’ll have to find out, won’t we?”

She shook her head, the smile stretching her lips tight. “Not tonight.” She wasn’t ready to fight, and neither was he. He didn’t like going into a fight not knowing if he could win or not. There was a reason why her name was whispered among their kind, why some feared her and others sought her out searching for death.

She brushed past him and down the hallway, back the way she had come. She turned around slowly to face him, her voice soft. “And I wasn’t going to hurt him. I trust Stefan; it’s you I don’t trust.”

“You never did.” Not even when he had given her reason to trust him. Eight years ago, he had tried to bury the monster, had tried to be a man for her. He had denied his true self, all to win her affection, and it hadn’t been worth it. She hadn’t been worth it. One mistake, one little slip up that involved him taking a bite out of a truly despicable waste of human flesh and she had turned her back on him. She had tried to kill him.

So he had stopped fighting his true nature.

He liked what he was, he wasn’t going to change.

“See you around, Damon,” she tossed over her shoulder as she left his brother’s house.

He rubbed the back of his neck, aggravated and thankful Stefan was running around with his human snack. He didn’t feel like dealing with him at the moment. He had to prepare, Buffy wasn’t here to have a chat and reminiscence about the good ole days. He could already feel her presence in the town, like an albatross around his neck.

He would rip her apart if he had to.

Great fic just for Damon/Buffy were in it togetherish. I just wish there were more fics with this pairing out there. Just with actual relationship stuff and a happy ending. Cause I think both characters really deserve a happy ending.
