Disclaimer: I don't own these people, they belong to themselves.
Summary: Kris just wanted to be normal. Of course, that wasn't about to happen when he finally gets to meet Adam.
Notes: This isn't even the full chapter but I'm posting anyway. LOL, there'll be more! (And, um, sorry if it sucks.)
For as long as the Landbeorht clan had been in existence, there had been humans who knew the truth about them, humans who helped them blend in and covered up what was really out there in the night.
Despite the various TV shows, movies, and book series, the world just wasn’t ready to know that vampires really did exist.
Over the years, the Landbeorht clan had started using another form of their name, Lambert, in order to blend in even more. They had gotten larger as over the years, various members of the clan had found their mates or consorts. The humans that worked with the clan were well taken care of in return for their services – which could range from offering blood to helping run a business to simply keeping a member of the clan company so they wouldn’t be lonely.
The Lambert clan always made sure that their humans were protected. It was a job that most people would grab hold of with both hands and never let go.
Kris Allen wasn’t most people. All he’d ever wanted was to be normal. Or as normal as he could be when he was part of a family of hunters—hunters that helped the Lambert clan, to top it all off. They helped when another clan decided to attack, whenever it seemed like trouble was getting stirred up. Really, the only time they’d been asked to stay out of it was when a member of the clan went rogue and started drawing attention to themselves and the rest of the clan.
Kris could fight but he wasn’t the best. He’d always thought Daniel was better at that, especially with the way he incorporated all those flips into the way he moved.
Honestly, the one thing that Kris had wasn’t something he’d given much thought to. He knew he was a bit of a psychic, he’d known ever since he’d accidentally heard Daniel thinking about what he wanted to do to his girlfriend.
Now that had been traumatizing.
Since then, he’d managed to block that power so that it was like he was the same as any other person. He’d decided to live on his own and go to school almost three years ago and it hadn’t been a problem – the Lambert clan didn’t hold them as slaves. Hell, Leila had called up his mother with suggestions of what areas of town were safer to live in when she’d heard he’d decided to go to the local university.
Of course, the fact that he was the only one in the family who actively avoided hunting and all of that just meant that he would end up in situations like this—handcuffed to a bar in a bare room in the next town over while vampires from another clan debated how useful he’d be when threatening the Lamberts.
Kris could have told them that he was just a guy going to school and not one of the Allens that actually went hunting but he wasn’t stupid. If he wasn’t useful, he may not be alive.
Briefly, Kris acknowledged that it probably would have been a good idea to have practiced using his powers before so that he wouldn’t be entirely helpless. But while Kris may not have the courage to use his powers, he was definitely smart enough to know that he couldn’t try using them in this type of situation. Who knew what they’d do to him if they found out that he had any sort of powers? Besides, he already knew that he wouldn’t have the control to pick the lock on the handcuffs.
“Well, now, how are you doing today, Mr. Allen?” The vampire that walked in smiled as he entered the room.
Kris raised an eyebrow. “I’m handcuffed to a bar, how do you think I am?”
“I think,” he said, “you should be grateful we didn’t rip your demon hunting head right off and mail it back to your family.”
