Title: Permanent Ghosts

Summary: One accident changes everything for Kris.
Disclaimer: I don't own these people. They belong to themselves.
Notes: I noticed that in fandom, I've only ever seen one fic where Kris has amnesia. Usually, it's Adam that does - especially if it's set during Idol or whatever. So I was whiny about Kris never getting bashed in the head or whatever and losing his memory and decided to just go for it and try my hand. Here's hoping! For the prompt, I was more inspired by the meaning that I found when I was looking it up. :)
So, here's part of the first chapter:
Kris frowned at the sound of a heart monitor. He remembered that sound very well from his time in the hospital when he’d been younger and he’d managed to avoid it since then. He sighed and shifted, wincing at the pain that shot through his body.
“Kris?”
He stilled and then slowly and carefully opened his eyes, his lips tilting up slightly at the sight of his mom sitting next to the bed.
“Hi, Momma,” he said, his voice no louder than a whisper. He frowned when tears filled her eyes and she leaned forward, touching his cheek. “Momma?”
“It’s been over a week,” she told him. “We weren’t sure when you’d wake up.”
Kris blinked at that, reaching up to squeeze her hand lightly. “I’m okay.”
Kim’s lips trembled and his eyes widened, panic shooting through him at the thought of his mother’s tears. “Momma,” he said. “I’m okay.”
“I know.” Kim nodded. “I can see that.” She let out a breath and trailed a hand down his face. “I can see that,” she repeated.
Kris felt himself relax as Kim began to talk about how worried his dad had been and how Daniel was already on his way. He frowned though when he heard an unfamiliar name and about how worried they’d been, dropping everything to come here.
“Momma?” he interrupted.
Kim paused. “Yes, Kristopher?”
His eyebrows drew together as he stared up at her. “Who’s Adam?”
~*~*~
It was 2015. Kris stared at the date at the top of the newspaper and swallowed hard. He’d lost years and he didn’t quite know what to do about that. The doctors had asked him all sorts of questions about what he knew and he was just fine until they started asking him about anything that happened after 2004. He remembered graduating from high school. He remembered breaking up with Katy and he remembered his freak out over liking guys (not that he was telling his Momma that, wow) but he couldn’t remember anything else.
Once the doctor had left, he’d asked his Momma some questions and she’d answered them as much as she could. She’d told him he’d gotten back together with Katy and eventually married her. They’d gotten divorced after a few years though, realizing that they’d been too young, but they still talked.
His parents still lived in Conway, Daniel was engaged, and Kris apparently hadn’t seriously dated anyone in a long time.
Adam was Adam Lambert, someone he’d met on American Idol (holy crap, how had Daniel managed to convince him to do that and how did he manage to win?) who had become his best friend. Adam had heard about Kris’s accident and immediately dropped everything he was doing to fly in. He’d been at the hospital every day and according to his momma, “he’ll be so upset that the one time we finally convinced him to go get some rest that you woke up.”
Kris sort of thought, if they were as close as his momma implied, that Adam was going to be more upset by Kris not remembering him.
