Summary: Torchwood helps out an alien species whose life cycle isn't how they expected.
“Have to stop them Jack! We have to bloody well stop them!” Gwen said trying to run forward and Jack caught her in his arms. She beat on him and tried to wiggle away. He held tight and firm, his eyes fixed on Ianto who was holding back his own tears.
“We can’t, Gwen can’t!” Jack told her shaking his head down at her. She gave him a slight right to the face and he didn’t flinch.
“But this is inhuman. From all the things I’ve seen, this is still too much. Too damn much!” Gwen cried and tears running down her face and ruining her make up.
“It is inhuman and that’s the point. They aren’t human, Gwen. We can’t have a say in what they do. We have to let them live and die as they do,” Jack explained knowing it won’t do any good.
“But they’re babies! Just hatched. These are their parents. They shouldn’t be-” Gwen said than stopped with a whimper of dismay and horror as they all heard another crunch. Jack closed his eyes against the mental image and was silently glad his back was turned to the carnage.
They had found a batch of eggs sitting in an old building. Animal control had handed over the case once Torchwood had gotten wind of it. Eggs the size of computer tower were definitely on their radar. They had kept the eggs warm and healthy, unsure what the rift had brought them. They had sent out a message into the darkest parts of space and waited for an answer.
The answer came in the form of giant ships which carried a senescent species of bug like creatures. They had a communication device they used with other species and told them via the device that the eggs were theirs. All a hundred and ninety-six had been laid from one breeding pair and they had met the happy parents.
Since the eggs were too old to be moved safely the birthing ceremony would simply have to happen in the abandoned warehouse. The creatures invited Jack, Gwen and Ianto to stay and they did, expecting a fun, uplifting experience. The building was squared off besides a small ‘breathing hole’ next to a door. They were warned that the children were going to be born about the size of a football and would be completely mindless for the next few decades. Their species were very slow to develop. The team hadn’t minded that at all,
It was when the first egg started to catch that things got crazy. The parents, which were on the floor close to the eggs, started foaming at the mouth. The rest of the aliens hovered about on their huge wings that worked much the same as bee wings, causing a horrible buzzing to fill the building. Once all the eggs had hatched the parents had started to eat them.
It was than that Gwen panicked and Jack had to hold her back. He understood in a twisted way. Over a hundred children each was too much for any parents to handle. This way the strongest, quickest and smartest survived and the other’s made the parents stronger to take care of the left overs.
Jack walked with Gwen towards the only opening and out the door. Ianto made his way to the door, facing towards the horror show and only turning once Jack had passed him. They all walked outside in a state of shock and realized they were trailing a track of green slime from their shoes. The blood from the children they had taken care of as eggs.
“Ianto,” Jack said sharply seeing the other’s arms behind his back.
“Well, umm, ya see” Ianto stuttered
“You didn’t!” Jack demanded.
“But it was the one with the spots in a line. The one you said looked like it had a tie on. It ran right to me and I couldn’t just let it be eaten,” Ianto complained.
Jack rolled his eyes.
“Well, I’m not taking it back,” Ianto told him firmly, “And it’s not like you’ll have to take care of it or anything.”
“Fine, just make sure our other pet doesn’t eat it.”
“What shall we name it?” Gwen asked wiping at her tears and smiling at larva looking creature.
“Junior. Ianto Junior,” Ianto said proudly.
