Summary: The plot emerges.
Billie sat on the floor, surrounded by Chili’s and Soda’s knees as they sat on the couch, facing the two young men who wove a fantastic tale. She stared at the two of them, marveling at how they really believed what they told the three of them. Stunned at what they said they wanted them to do.
The red head spoke the most, telling all about where he came from, the world so different than their own. If it weren’t for the stillness of Chili’s body, the alertness of Soda’s eyes, she would have called him insane.
Time travel.
Sure, there were novels, the rich talked about them. She couldn’t read, so they meant nothing to her, but the two men seemed to find a bit of truth to the man’s words. And, she had to admit, so did she. He really believed he came from a different reality than them.
“We built it together,” he said, with a glance at his shy friend. “It took us only a year to get all the parts and set them all up. It was our pride and joy.” A smile flickered across his lips, quickly gone as he went on, “We never meant to do any harm. To see the past, to meet the people so famous, you know?” He shook his head and pressed a hand to his eyes. “It wasn’t supposed to turn out like this.”
As if he couldn’t contain himself, he stood and began pacing the room. “The United States is- was- at war. Somehow, somebody found out about our time machine.” Here he snorted with anger. “Nobody gave us any credit. Who would believe a time machine possible? We were a laughingstock.” He paused next to the wall, the window above him just casting a bit of light on his red hair, making him glow in the interior lighting. “Someone must have believed we did it, because someone broke in here and stole our notes, our prototype, and our data.” He once again covered his tired eyes with both hands, scrubbing at his face. “The next thing we knew, the world was like this.”
He couldn’t hold back a bark of laughter, full of pain and regret. “The U.S. is gone and all of the world is different.”
Here’s where the younger took over. “We looked for what happened and we found who took our project, and what they did with it.” He pulled out a file of papers and handed them to Soda. Soda leaned forward and flipped open the file, showing glossy photos and sheets of neatly typed words to her. “These are the men who went back in time and destroyed the U.S. before it had a chance to be.” His lips thinned. “We want you to go through the time machine and stop them.”
Billie’s head snapped up, eyes wide as she stared at the two men. Travel through time? Change the world? The whole of the mission began to emerge in her mind.
Everything she ever knew would be changed. The four great empires of the world would crumble, if their words were anything to go by. A new one would rise and everything would be different. They would change history.
Chili rubbed one hand along his jaw. “If we change history, what will happen to us?”
The two shared a glance. Then: “You’ll remember your lives as they are now. You’ll remember this world and you’ll not change a bit.”
“And if we don’t like this new world you will have us create?”
That gave them pause and Billie touched a hand to Chili’s knee. “They can’t come up with a reason why we won’t like their world over ours.” She turned back to them. “Is that world so much better than this one?”
He shrugged. “We were free in that world. That is our home.”
