Summary: Dexter's having trouble coming to terms with fatherhood

Dexter was going crazy, literally not figuratively. His dark passenger was pressing against his head, screaming in his ear, crying out for attention and he could give him none. He was a single father of three and there was no way he could get away for the amount of time he’d need to go on a hunt.

“Dexter,” Cody said from beside him and he turned only his head. His body felt too sore and heavy. They had given him time off of work, a month to get things settled, more time if he needed it. Deb had come home as often as possible, but for the most part it had been him and the kids. The crying, the arguing, the screaming, the god damn mother fucki-

“Dexter,” Cody again and it’s hard to keep his cool.

“Yeah,” Dexter forced out as cool and calm as possible. He didn’t feel it though. He wanted to lash out. To strangle the kid and ignore the rules against him. Bury him in the backyard and keep him quiet. Something akin to guilt swept into his mind and he knew he couldn’t do that. Even if he really wanted to.

“Can we go to the park tomorrow?” the boy asked his voice somewhat hallow and definitely sad. Dexter didn’t want to take them to the park. He’d have to pack up the baby things, get the teenage girl to agree with it, get Cody ready than wash him off when he came home covered in sad. He couldn’t argue though. Cody had been through so much. He should feel sympathetic to that struggle, but he didn’t. He couldn’t.

“Sure,” Dexter said brashly. He didn’t want to say anything else, but Cody would likely bring up why he wanted to go the park. Perhaps it was to get away from the bathroom. The first crime scene that had ever upset him. They were moving out, but it took time and so much effort. They’d stayed at a hotel for a while, but it was eating away at his savings and considering the tiny life insurance that was on Rita was only enough to get her into the ground, well he couldn’t afford a hotel until the house was sold.

Maybe if they went to the park he could watch. He could watch for some moron to make a movie, a pedophile, that’d be perfect. He could fallow the man, stick a needle into his throat and…and…

“What’s wrong Dexter?” Cody asked below him and Dexter has to smile.

“Nothing. Why do you ask big guy?”

“You growled,” Cody said a little intimidated now.

“Oh,” Dexter said unsure how to cover that up, “Just had something in my throat.”

“Okay,” Cody said before going over to stare at the tv again.

Of course he couldn’t wander off to kill a pedophile. He was a single father of two with no support besides a bossy grandmother and an unpredictable sister. What he needed was someone to watch them while he was away. He needed another wife. With that a plan was hatched in his mind
