Title: Wish for Death
Fandom: Sandman/Re-animator
Rating: PG
Prompt: Hell hath no fury like
“You’ve been playing in my sandbox too long,” Death said walking into the room that was completely black besides a florescent light above them. The fear in his eyes was visible and she understood. He’d feared her for a very long time, it was hard to give up even when you were defeated. She’d seen that a million, perhaps billions, times over .
“Who are you?” Dr. West asked staring down at himself. He had been an old man a moment ago, but now he was young and viral again.
“That which you’ve searched to destroy you’re whole life,” she said walking over to him and smiling, “Death.”
“Death? You’re a verb, not a noun. I must have passed out,” Dr. West said grabbing at his head, “A coma? That’s possible.”
“You’re eighty-six, Dr. West, do you really think you’re in a common?” Death asked with a giggle.
“I’m not dead,” he said calmly, “I have bypassed the death process and made it impossible to die.”
“Which is a rather big pain for me, Dr. West. So you can understand why I’m not greeting you with the sunniest of depositions today. I’m normally a very happy to see you type of person, but you Dr. West have mad my job rather hard. Humans have spent a very long time death and what I am, but none as much as you. No one has ever gone to such great lengths to avoid me either. You spent your whole life trying to avoid death and really you completely forgot to live. It’s a sad thing to watch and those you’ve harmed in the path is an even sadder event to watch,” Death said her lips curling into an unhappy frown. She twirled her umbrella behind her head and reached out a hand. Dr. West jumped out of her way.
“I’m not dead. I can’t die. I found the loophole,” he explained, trying to run, but found a wall suddenly before him. He panicked, hitting it with both of his fits and screamed. “No! No! This can’t be happening. I’m not dead. I fooled you. I stopped you. You aren’t real. You’re only something we’ve accepted because we’ve got no other choice. We no longer have to give in to you. You’re reign over us is completely over.”
“You can’t fool me. You can’t deny me. Even if you’re immortal sooner or later I’ll come to get you. I’ll find you and you’ll welcome me with open arms. Like I was saying you’ve caused me a lot of trouble, a lot of heartache. That’s why I’m not going to take you right now. I’m going to leave you here,” Death said still frowning at him.
“Good. I’ll be alive,” he said laughing in triumph.
“Oh no. Not at all. You’ll just be here. I’m going to leave you in that husk,” she said motioning to his body.
“What? Why?” Dr. West argued.
“You’ve been so attached to your physical body for so long. You’ll learn to wish for death,” Death said motioning with her hand and sending him back into his dead body. She didn’t like punishments, didn’t see a need for it most the time, but she’d had to watch people suffer in their bodies because he couldn’t let them die. He deserved a taste of his own medicine.
