Summary: Jack just has to keep going

He just kept going.

It was hard being on a road that just kept going. Especially when the road was this hard and never seemed to forgive.

He just kept walking and walking. Every once in a while he would fall down on his knees and died with arms spread open. He’d wake up again, gasp for breath that would be denied to him then continue walking. It was a hard, long trip. Nothing ever changed and if anything, things only got worse. It was a cold unforgiving coarse. No one should have to take it alone, but he had no choice. No one could walk beside him on a journey like this.

With every step he did his best to think back on the good times. The sound of Ianto’s voice. Gwen’s smile on her wedding day. Tosh’s squeal as she realized something no one in the universe would figure out. Owen’s badly timed joke and inappropriate comments. The smell of Rose’s hair as they danced in the among the smell of canon smoke. The doctor’s welcoming embrace and belated acceptance. It was all a better time. Something to look forward to happening again, maybe.

It was a cold, dark and empty feeling being down here for so long. It felt like more pressuring was pressing down on him than he’d ever felt before and he was never sure if he could take it. Ever step was a stolen moment and every time he came back to life the pain felt like a relief from the nothingness. Death was darkness and darkness was his life. It was almost hard to tell  the two apart anymore. Everything hurt and he almost fell down and gave up. Life was just too hard and dying was just too easy even if he did have to come back.

The echoing voices of those he’d lost, those he’d left behind and those he’d yet to met. Even those echoes were fading. He felt like an Alkaline battery slowly being drained of any life. He kept going, but even the last sparks were leaving him. Finally he closed his eyes and let the waves take  him.

He woke up with a sharp intake of breath as life flooded where there should be none. There was light all around him and dark beyond that. It was night time and he could see the sky.

“He’s here, or god he’s here,” Gwen’s voice echoed through him and he reached up. She took his hand and sat beside him. She put his cold fingers to her cheek and coddled them for a moment. Ianto came up behind her and fell on the sand beside him.

“Jack, fuck Jack,” Ianto cussed and grabbed his other hand.

“Later. I need a shower first,” Jack said although he had been at the bottom of the bay for nearly a month he didn’t exactly feel clean. The cement around his feet was more or less chipped and almost come off. His clothing were tattered and he might as well be naked, but it didn’t matter. Even as he turned over and coughed up a month worth of salt water he didn’t give a damn. Ianto was rubbing his back in comfort and Gwen was crying with joy. He was back to the good times.
