Summary: After The Gift, Willow has to adapt to living in Buffy's house.

It was pitch black in Willow's room when she woke up, a sure sign that she probably should not be naturally awake. She lay still for a moment, sleepy and trying to assess what had woken her up until she realized that it was her bladder. Tara was asleep beside her, but after a moment Willow knew that her body simply would not let her go back to sleep. She sat up as gently as possible, but Tara still awoke and sat up, looking at Willow questioningly.

"I have to pee," Willow whispered. Tara just blinked sleepily at her and laid her head down again. Willow scooted out of bed, smiling apologetically to her lover as she silently left the room. She knew that Tara would still be awake when she came back, waiting to wrap her arms around her when Willow got under the sheets again.

The bathroom was merciful, but the light was too much for her eyes. Willow washed her hands, avoiding confronting herself in the mirror because she knew how sleepy she would look. The summer was going to be hard, and living in her best friend's house would be even harder.

Willow cut off the light and left the bathroom, momentarily stopped by the darkness around her until her eyes could adjust again. There was a glow coming from the stairs, and the sound of the television drifted up to her. It was not an unfamiliar occurrence, so Willow went downstairs to check on Dawn and turn the television off.

She crept quietly into the living room, guided by the flicker of the movie on the screen. Surprisingly, it was something that she recognized even though it almost looked like an old western flick. Hidalgo, she thought it was called. It seemed to be about fifteen minutes away from the end of the film. She wondered if Dawn had actually chosen this movie to watch or if there'd been nothing else on tv. It just didn't seem like her kind of thing.

Willow reached the couch and looked around for the remote, instead finding Dawn curled up on the couch, covered in a blanket, as if someone had already tended to her.

"She's fine," came a low whisper, and Willow lifted her head, a little startled to see Spike sitting on a chair, half-lit in the dark.

"What are you doing here?" Willow asked him, keeping her voice very low, so Dawn wouldn't wake.

The vampire shifted in his seat, looking back at the TV without actually having any interest in it at all. "I couldn't stay away anymore. I promised her I'd look after her sis."

Willow barely heard the last part, but she knew what Spike has said, regardless. It was the same thing he kept trying to tell Xander, over and over again, but the stubborn, grieving man wouldn't let Spike have anything to do with Dawn. That was just the first day after Buffy died. Spike was half drunk then, and the next four days he successfully kept himself drowning in liquor. From what Willow understood he barely slept, and the Sunnydale cemetery had attained some serious damages.

"Spike," Willow said, "You have to stop drinking."

"You think it's easy, Red?"

"If you want to see Dawn," Willow paused, knowing that right then, Dawn was the only person he remotely cared about, "you have to stop."

"Harris wouldn't let me near her anyway," Spike muttered to himself.

"Xander isn't here," Willow replied simply. Spike lifted his head to look at her, surprised and waiting to see what she really meant. Instead of outright elaborating, Willow just walked to the windows and closed the curtains tightly. "If you're going to fall asleep, try to turn off the TV first," she said to him. "Tara makes pancakes in the morning, if you're interested."

"Vampires don't eat pancakes, love," Spike reminded her.

"Maybe not," Willow smiled as she started to leave, only stopping to tuck Dawn's blanket around her, "but it would be good to know how to cook them, because they're Dawn's favorite."

Willow's line about the pancakes is just fantastic. ;-)
