Summary: After Kris lost his recording contract when he and Adam publicly came out as a couple, he went to nursing school. Now he's graduated and starting his new job in the ER, Adam's touring, and Kris is lonely. This is when he meets Dr. Jensen Ackles.
Disclaimer: I don't own any of these people. They belong to themselves.
Notes: I started this for a prompt at
aianonlovefest which is basically the summary (with the added addition that Adam finds out and well...I'm not telling what happens next, that'd spoil the fun!) but originally the doctor was supposed to be an OMC. I'm going slightly off prompt because, well, pretty. (I'm shallow.) So, no, not even close to done. Used more the meaning of the prompt with Kris's actions.
Chapter One
Kris groaned and rolled over, squinting at the clock. He groaned again and buried his face in his pillow when he saw that it had only been four hours since he’d fallen asleep.
One more hour, he thought. Just one.
Still, once he’d closed his eyes, he couldn’t fall back asleep. No matter how hard he tried, the sun would not be ignored. Sighing, he pushed himself up and stumbled out of bed, blearily making his way to the bathroom, hoping a shower would wake him up.
Quickly brushing his teeth, he thought over what he’d have to do that day—he’d promised to call his momma and let her know how his first official day had gone. He’d do that after lunch, though it was technically breakfast for him. Maybe pasta. (“It’s best when it’s al dente, Kris, trust me.” Adam had smiled and dragged him to kitchen, determined to cook dinner despite the fact that Adam was only good at making breakfast.) He needed to go shopping, the fridge was getting empty. He nodded as he waited for the water to get hot.
The hot water felt like heaven as it beat against his shoulders and he sighed in relief. It was tempting to simply stand there and just let the water hit him. Instead, Kris rolled his shoulders and reached for the shampoo.
As he quickly washed his hair and scrubbed himself, he made a mental list of what else he’d have to do—he was pretty sure that he shouldn’t let the laundry sit any longer. He’d been putting it off for over a week and it was going to be a pain if he left it any longer.
Blowing out a breath, he rinsed off and turned off the water, blindly reaching out for the towel to dry himself off.
Kris blinked, slightly more awake than he had been earlier as he went back into the room and pulled on jeans and a shirt.
The small envelope on his phone alerted him that he had a message.
“Adam,” he said softly. He’d promised to call even though Kris had told him he probably wouldn’t be able to answer. Smiling, he typed in the command to hear his new messages.
“Hey, man, it’s me. Just wanted to see how the first day went but I guess you’re not off yet. Mom said you were going to call her later so maybe I’ll talk to you then. Talk to you later, bro!”
Kris sighed, smile fading. Not that it wasn’t great to hear from his brother but it would’ve been nice to hear Adam’s voice. Briefly, he debated calling and leaving Adam a message about how the night had gone before he shook his head. He was going to eat and call his momma, like he’d promised. Shaking his head, he shoved his phone in his pocket and went to go make lunch.
~*~*~
The day had passed faster than he’d expected—though Kris had a feeling that was partly due to the nap he’d managed to take after he’d thrown the laundry in the dryer. He hadn’t had time to go shopping because he’d taken the nap so he’d have to do that after his shift ended. It probably wasn’t going to be the best time to go shopping since it’d be after another twelve hour shift but if he went home and slept first, he’d end up doing other things again most likely. He knew himself too well to deny it.
Closing his eyes, he relished the taste of coffee and sighed softly.
“Rough shift?”
His eyes snapped open and he swallowed quickly, spinning to find a doctor that looked vaguely familiar standing there, holding a cup of his own. The doctor was definitely gorgeous and he swallowed, well aware that he was already flushing slightly.
“No,” he answered. “Not really.” Shaking his head at himself, he smiled. “I guess I’ve just gotten used to eight hours of sleep.”
The other man laughed. “Between school and the shifts that they have you work? How’d you manage that?”
Kris’ smile turned to a grin. “I was lucky enough to get short shifts.”
“Yeah, you definitely got lucky.” He returned Kris’s grin with one of his own. “I’m Jensen Ackles, by the way.”
“Kris Allen.” He held out a hand. “It’s nice to meet you.”
“Likewise.” Jensen shook his hand. “First day?” he asked.
Kris laughed. “Second, actually. Is it that obvious?”
“Not really but if you’re still used to eight hours of sleep, I figured you must not be used to the long shifts.” He tilted his head. “Graduated or working on it?”
“Just graduated.” He took another drink of coffee. “Actually, with all the classes I was taking, I don’t know how I managed eight hours of sleep then either.”
Jensen grinned. “Where there’s a will and all that.” He glanced down at his watch and swore. “Break’s about over,” he said, draining the rest of his coffee before he tossed the cup. “I have to...” He tilted his head towards the door but offered Kris a small smile, reaching out to squeeze his shoulder. “I’ll see you around, Kris. Don’t forget to take advantage of the forty minutes they give you for napping. It helps, trust me.”
“I’ll remember that,” Kris told him, watching him leave the room.
He took another drink of coffee and pulled out his phone and turned it on, surprised when he saw that he had another message. He looked at the clock. He had enough time to listen to it and finish his coffee. Quickly, he dialed his voicemail for the second time that day.
“Hey, babe, it’s me. Sorry I didn’t call earlier. There ended up being a couple of last minute interviews I had to go to. You’re probably already back at work, right? I can never remember how the time difference works. But call me whenever you get home, I want to hear all about how it’s going so far.” There was a sound like Adam was covering the receiver and he heard muffled voices before, “Okay, looks like I have to go again. Love you!”
Smiling brightly, Kris saved the message and then turned off his phone, sliding it back into his pocket.
