Title: Freaks
Fandom: Carnival
Rating: PG
Summary: Samson's musings.

“The idea of a natural freak is a myth. An idea conjured up to make people feel better about those that look different. We’re all human. A woman with a beard is no different than a man with blue eyes. It’s all a trick of birth, a little surprise at the end of the long road into life. Yet some are viewed as different and gawked at.

Next time you walk into a freak show ignore the stage. Look around you at the various faces paying to stare at some slightly different fellow or lady. The women whose albino has feelings, the lizard skinned man has children, the midget, oh the midget is smarter than you. Those aren’t the people you need to be looking at. No, your neighbor is the one dehumanizing those in front of them into some sort of inhuman thing. What’s more freakish then a human who can treat other humans as animals. Who can stare as if they were animals in a zoo and feel no shame. Look at those full grown men who paid their hard earned coin to do nothing more than be shocked by a different format of humanity.

Normality means so much to them they are unable to understand or comprehend any tweak in the structure of a human face, in stature, in color. Isn’t skin but a mask we hide a soul behind? Isn’t ever body a temple? The good book says, but like so many important things is ignored. Love they neighbor. Thee without sin shall cast the first stone.

At least they have to pay to look at a freak show. Unlike the stares on the streets, the jeers in the night, the beatings in the dark alley ways and the spit that flies from every direction. At a freak show they’re taking the audience for a ride. Spitting in their face for twenty five cents a person. For once the audience is the one being heckled and degraded. Lead like pigs and entertained like dogs. It’s all pathetic to watch.

So next time you walk into the circus tent, the next time you pay your fifty cents, the next time you stare into the eyes of two girls who share one body. Remember those eyes are staring back at you. Judging you for judging what you don’t understand. The freaks stand outside the curtains and look perfectly normal.”

“Come one come all to the Carnival,” Stumpy called as Samson watched him with one of those eerie all knowing looks, “step right up and see the girls connected by two a string of flesh. Stop by and exam the women with the hair of a man upon her chin. A shave would help, but then she won’t be here now would she? Don’t miss out on the lizard man from Africa. Born of snakes like in the garden of eden. Will you eat his forbidden fruits or run in fear back to your mommies and daddies. Walk inside and be amazed. For only twenty five cents you can have the tour of a lifetime!”
