Summary: After Kris lost his recording contract when he and Adam publicly came out as a couple, he went to nursing school. Now he's graduated and starting his new job in the ER, Adam's touring, and Kris is lonely. This is when he meets Dr. Jensen Ackles.
Disclaimer: I don't own any of these people. They belong to themselves.
Notes: I started this for a prompt at
aianonlovefest which is basically the summary (with the added addition that Adam finds out and well...I'm not telling what happens next, that'd spoil the fun!) but originally the doctor was supposed to be an OMC. I'm going slightly off prompt because, well, pretty. (I'm shallow.) So, no, not even close to done. Used more the meaning of the prompt with Kris's actions.
Chapter One
Chapter Two
Days passed with Kris following the same routine. Kris would go to work, he’d make sure to nap and on his breaks he talked to Jensen. After work, he’d sleep, run errands, do whatever chores were necessary before it started all over again.
He rolled his shoulders before shrugging into his jacket. His feet were killing him and all he wanted was to go home. But he had bills to drop off first and he was pretty sure that Adam was going to actually have some free time to talk, which would be a nice change of pace. They hadn’t been able to talk since Kris had called him back a few days ago.
“Adjusted to the schedule yet, Kris?” Jensen asked from where he was pulling out his own keys. Kris laughed, shrugging slightly as they both began to walk towards the parking lot.
“I’m working on it.” He glanced over as they walked down the hallway. “I’ll probably be used to it by next week.”
“You can catch up on sleep when you’ve got a day off at least.” Jensen sighed. “I’ve got to come in tomorrow.”
“I thought you had one of those so-called days off tomorrow.” Kris grinned a little. “Or are those really just a myth that you dangle in front of the newbies before you smash their hopes into tiny little pieces?”
Jensen snorted and shook his head. No, but I’ll keep that in mind. I have to come in to pick up my check.”
Kris shook his head again. “It’s called direct deposit, Dr. Ackles. You should check it out.”
“Smart ass.”
“Only on special occasions.” Kris laughed when Jensen shoved at him with one hand, dodging out of the way.
“You work tomorrow?”
Kris nodded. “Yeah. My day off isn’t until next week,” he said.
Jensen smiled. “Then I guess I’ll see you tomorrow.” He raised an eyebrow. “I’ll even bring you some of the good coffee.”
Kris laughed. “You’re my hero.” Impulsively, he reached out and pulled Jensen into a hug. “Bye, Jensen.”
Still smiling, he headed towards his car.

“So, how was work?” Adam asked.
Kris shrugged despite the fact that Adam couldn’t see him. “It was...good. No major injuries that we had to take care of but my feet are killing me.” He laughed. “But I get a day off next week so it’ll be good.”
“If I were there, I’d make you relax while I made dinner.”
Kris shook his head. “Breakfast for dinner?” he teased.
“Shut up, not all of us are cooks.” It was easy to tell that Adam was smiling when he said it and Kris couldn’t help but smile in return.
“On the bright side, I won’t have to drink hospital coffee tomorrow. Jensen’s bringing in the good stuff.”
There was a pause. “Jensen?”
Kris frowned as he looked in the fridge. He could’ve sworn he’d bought juice. “Yeah, he’s a doctor I work with.” Shoving the milk to the side, he grinned in triumph at finding the juice, pulling it out and pouring himself a glass. “We’ve had the same shift. You’d like him.”
“Only if he’s going to bring me coffee,” Adam said. Kris leaned back against the counter, drinking more than half the glass in one go.
“How was the show last night? I haven’t gotten to look it up.”
Adam laughed. “Kris, I wish you could’ve seen it. That crowd...it was insane. I loved it. They threw panties, for crying out loud. Some of them had phone numbers on them.”
Kris burst out laughing. “How do you even know that?” he managed to ask, taking another drink.
“Tommy told me.” In the background, Kris heard Tommy yell that Adam was full of it and he snickered.
“What are you doing tomorrow?”
“Another concert, smaller this time, a meet and greet, and an interview. Then we leave for London.”
Kris sighed, setting the glass in the sink as he fought back a yawn.
“I miss you.”
On the other end, he heard Adam let out a breath. “I miss you too. Only a couple more months though and then I’ll be back and annoying the crap out of you by ruining whatever routine you’ve managed to come up with.”
Kris laughed again, cutting off when he had to yawn for a second time. “I can’t wait.”
“You sound like you’re falling asleep,” Adam said. “You should go to bed. I don’t want you falling asleep on the job and I’m betting your patients wouldn’t either.”
Shaking his head, Kris made his way to the bedroom. “You make it sound like I’m one of the doctors. I’m just a nurse.”
“Hey, don’t act like that’s not just as important, okay? You—“ He cut off when there was a bang and then someone talking and then Kris heard him talking to someone in the background, sounding annoyed, “It’s my afternoon off.” He sighed. “Kris, babe, I’ve got to go.”
Kris frowned despite the fact that they’d been about to hang up. “They work you too hard.”
“One of the downsides,” Adam said. “But worth it. I’ll try to call you again soon, okay?”
“Okay.” Kris fought back a sigh. “Love you.”
“Love you too. Get—I’m coming! I’ve gotta go, Kris. Bye, I’ll call you!”
“Okay,” he sighed when he heard the click signaling that Adam had hung up, “bye.” He stared at the phone for a few minutes before he shook his head and tossed his phone onto the nightstand, sliding beneath the sheets and wishing that Adam was there.
