Title: The Space In Between
Author: [livejournal.com profile] blue_icy_rose
Rating: Eventually R
Word Count: 827
Warnings: AU - for you'll see, lol.
Summary: After Kris lost his recording contract when he and Adam publicly came out as a couple, he went to nursing school. Now he's graduated and starting his new job in the ER, Adam's touring, and Kris is lonely. This is when he meets Dr. Jensen Ackles.
Disclaimer: I don't own any of these people. They belong to themselves.
Notes: I started this for a prompt at [livejournal.com profile] aianonlovefest which is basically the summary (with the added addition that Adam finds out and well...I'm not telling what happens next, that'd spoil the fun!) but originally the doctor was supposed to be an OMC. I'm going slightly off prompt because, well, pretty. (I'm shallow.) So, no, not even close to done. Used more the meaning of the prompt with Kris's actions.

Kris bit his lip, adjusting his grip on his guitar case, before he took a deep breath and headed up the walkway. He didn’t let himself hesitate before he knocked on the door, shifting his weight as he waited. He smiled when the door opened to reveal Jensen.

“Hey, man, come on in,” he said, opening the door wider and gesturing inside. Kris grinned and walked through the doorway, “You can meet the guys and help us convince Chris that he doesn’t need to buy AstroTurf to turn his backyard into his own personal golf course.”

Kris laughed, and he was still laughing when Jensen pulled him into a brief hug before shoving him lightly in the direction of what Kris assumed was the living room. From where he stood, Kris could hear guys laughing and playing and he smiled at the sound before he followed Jensen into the room.

“I thought you were grabbing the beer,” was the first thing Kris heard.

“Do I look like a maid to you, Kane?” Jensen asked.

“Well, not without that pretty little outfit I bought you, son.” The man’s eyes moved to Kris even as Jensen flipped him off. “You going to introduce us?”

“Kris, this asshole is Christian Kane and that’s Steve Carlson. Guys, this is Kris Allen.”

Steve grinned. “Don’t mind them, Kris. They could be worse.”

“I guess they could,” Kris agreed. “After all, they could be bringing up Jensen’s love of heels.” He attempted the most innocent look that he could manage when Jensen protested and he watched as Chris threw back his head and laughed.

“Oh, we’re going to get along just fine,” he said.

“Fuck,” Jensen groaned.

It was easier than Kris had thought it would be to fit in with Jensen and his friends. They’d fallen into a rhythm almost immediately and he’d actually been surprised by how well he and Chris got along. He couldn’t remember the last time he’d laughed so hard just from annoying someone (“Kris, mind tossing me the remote?” “Not at all, Chris.” “If you two don’t shut up, I’m going to kill you.”) and Chris had tried his hardest to convince him to do a duet with him. It hadn’t happened but Kris had promised that he’d do it another day. He’d spent nearly an hour helping Steve work out the bridge for his latest song even as they talked about various sports they liked. He and Jensen had managed to talk about things other than work for once as well.

Kris had been grateful that they’d managed to avoid any awkward moments about performing in public—after all, this hadn’t been a public performance so he knew he couldn’t get in any trouble for it. Instead, it had flowed as easily as if he had known them all for years.

He stayed later than he meant to but he knew that he’d still have plenty of time to get to bed before he had to go to work.

“Hey, you’re coming next time, right? We definitely have to do this again.” Chris slapped a hand on Kris’ shoulder with a grin.

“Yeah, I’ll be here.” Kris nodded and knew that it was true.

“We’re having a barbeque in a couple of weeks for...well, no reason at all, really, but you should stop by for a burger at least if you can,” Steve added.

Kris laughed. “Which one of you does the grilling?”

“Please, my house, my grill,” Chris said. “So, of course, I make Jensen do it.”

“If he wears an apron, I can guarantee I won’t miss it.”

“It’s frilly and pink.”

“I hate you both. I never should have introduced you,” Jensen declared. “Kris, my apron is not frilly or pink. It’s a very manly green.”

That set Kris off again as he picked up his guitar case. “I am not missing this.” He let Chris pull him into a hug and then did the same with Steve. “It was good meeting you guys.”

“Likewise,” Steve agreed.

“I’ll see you at the hospital,” Jensen told him, pulling him into a hug. Kris shut his eyes briefly as he hugged him back before he quickly opened his eyes and pulled away with a small smile.

“Yeah, I’ve got the late shift again.”

“It’s your turn to bring the coffee.”

“You doctors, never doing any work,” Kris teased.

Jensen snorted. “Shut up.” He squeezed Kris’ shoulder and then stepped back as Kris stepped back again, walking out the door.

Kris carefully put his guitar in the backseat before getting in the car and glancing at the house for a moment. He smiled again before starting the car and driving off.

He had to do at least one load of laundry so that he’d have clean scrubs and then he could go to bed.

The thought had his smile widening even as he anticipated hanging out with Jensen and his friends again.

It’d been a good day.
