Summary: Even gods have desires.

Life enthralled him. When he first discovered that simple life had begun on living on his children, he detached himself from his main body and came to visit them. He watched the tiny creatures as they were born, lived their short lives, then died. He watched as they grew, as they changed and adapted to the worlds they lived on.
When they grew intelligent, he acted like them and taught them, and lived among them. They weren’t his children, but his great grandchildren. The children of planets, the children of stars, his children. He loved them all.
He explained once, who he was and they worshiped him. They named him Nova and bestowed upon him the title Ser, Great Lord. They loved him in return and built temples to him.
This was his treasure, these two planets that lived side by side, full of life and love for him. He loved all life in all planets, but these two were his favorites.
Life was important, and he learned that love was important as well. He saw how it made them bloom, and he envied them their love, fearing that he would never find a love of his own.
Then gods were born. Life made the gods and the gods were powerful and immortal, like him. In the gods, he found friends that lasted longer than a few years and they gave his children and grandchildren life of their own. The twin gods, Tharôn and Eggak, one fire, the other water. The gods of dreams and day and night. Gods of wind and of mothers and fathers. There were hundreds of gods, and more to be found on each planet, but the twin planets had one god that Nova hadn’t known he hadn’t know.
The living worshiped Nova as their great creator, and the living worshiped the gods in everyday life. The one god they worshiped above all others, was Dar, the god of fire, visions, and death. He became their number one god and grew into great power without Nova noticing.
When he did, Nova came to greet the fledging great god on his own land, Tharôn.
The god was all that was proper and greeted his creator god with all due respect. He knelt before Nova, took his hand in his, and kissed the knuckles.
“Ser Nova, ‘tis honored I to have your presence here.”
“Ser Dar, stand, for you have grown into a great position.”
The blonde god stood, standing taller than Nova, and their eyes met for the first time and Nova learned that gods, and even he, could love.
Everybody loved Nova, it was part of what he was. Everything that came close to him was ensnared by his gravity. Always spiraling closer and closer. He was powerful and great and Nova feared love as much as he desired it. As he recognized the fluttering in his chest for this young god of fire, Nova backed away. Could he love someone, and expect more than just love based on his inescapable gravity?
Dar wouldn’t be refused. He followed where Nova hid and courted the greatest being in their galaxy, always careful not take a wrong step and thrust the dark hole further away from him. For being such a powerful force, Nova was easily upset.
Dar introduced the Ser to simple pleasures such as walking in a silent park at midday and dancing with mortals in firelight. The great god was wise beyond knowing, but so enthralled with everything around him, and Dar strove to show him all he could. It was a fun game. But he wanted so much more. Dar hadn’t made it to the throne of his pantheon by staying his hand, so he courted the other god at his best.
They were walking not so near a beach when Dar reached for his soul mate. Their fingers had just touched when Nova became distracted.
“Look, Dar! I haven’t seen this in ages.” He tugged his hand free and went to a puddle in the sand. Sighing, Dar moved closer, careful not to get too close. He leaned forward to see … nothing.
“Ser?”
Nova dipped his hand into the puddle and Dar shuddered in disgust. “It’s life at its start.” He stood and cupped one hand under the slime now crawling down his fingers. Dar backed away, one arm raised as if to protect himself if the slime were to suddenly attack. Nova didn’t notice, too enthralled with the grey goop.
“This is what mortals are all made from.” He spread his fingers and the stuff stretched between the digits. “Isn’t it wondrous?” He looked up to see Dar’s face full of horror and his body quaking with minute trembles. Nova tilted his head. “You fear this? This is your parent matter.”
Dar shook his head. “We are your children, and gods are children of mortals.”
“And mortals wouldn’t exist without this. Why do you hate it?”
“It’s liquid. I’m a god of fire. It’s only natural.”
Nova grinned. “Isn’t your sister water?”
Dar scoffed. “Niph is my brother.”
“And is he afraid of fire?” Nova dropped the handful of goop back into its puddle and wiped his hand on his trousers.
“Water devours fire, kills it.”
“You fear your brother?”
Dar shook his head. “No, never. I love him. We are joined in such a way that we are equal. I control the burning sky and he controls the rolling seas.”
“But you live on land on water.”
“And he lives in clouds in the sky.”
“You two are truly united. I would wish for something like that, one day.”
Dar saw his chance and took it. He gathered Nova’s hands in his. “Ser, I would give that to you.” He brought the god’s hands to his lips, kissing the back of one, then the other. “I would be by your side for all my life and I would be forever yours.”
He met Nova’s dark blue gaze and almost cried out in anguish at the sadness therein. Nova took one hand free and cupped Dar’s cheek. “And when you die? Am I to suffer the loss alone?”
Dar shook his head furiously. “Never. As fire must die, it must always return to consume the land. Always will fire be a part of all life, and thus as long as fire exists, I will return to you after this godly shell is forgotten.”
