Title: The Space In Between
Author:

Rating: Eventually R
Word Count: 949
Warnings: AU - for you'll see, lol.
Summary: After Kris lost his recording contract when he and Adam publicly came out as a couple, he went to nursing school. Now he's graduated and starting his new job in the ER, Adam's touring, and Kris is lonely. This is when he meets Dr. Jensen Ackles.
Disclaimer: I don't own any of these people. They belong to themselves.
Notes: I started this for a prompt at
aianonlovefest which is basically the summary (with the added addition that Adam finds out and well...I'm not telling what happens next, that'd spoil the fun!) but originally the doctor was supposed to be an OMC. I'm going slightly off prompt because, well, pretty. (I'm shallow.) So, no, not even close to done. Used more the meaning of the prompt with Kris's actions.
Chapter One Chapter Two Chapter Three Chapter Four Chapter Five
Chapter Six Chapter Seven
Kris hated being sick. He curled up on the couch and stared at the TV screen with a vigilance that would’ve made the palace guards jealous. He had talked to Adam a couple of times using text and a part of him really wanted to call him, even if it was just to hear his voice.
Of course, that wouldn’t help with the “no talking” rule that was put in place and he just knew that if he tried getting around it, Jensen would have some freaky doctor way of knowing that he had. It was slightly terrifying when Kris thought about it.
He shifted so that he was lying down on the couch and then grinned when he noticed the small stack of board games that Brad had brought over claiming that, yes, he could totally do normal right before he demanded to know why he’d had to hear that Kris was sick from Adam instead of Kris calling himself. Trying to point out that he couldn’t talk didn’t do any good with Brad though since he just raised an eyebrow and said, “That’s what texting is for, Kris.”
Really, Kris gave up on trying to win an argument with Brad long ago.
If it wasn’t Brad that was there, it was Jensen. Kris almost felt like he was living in a comedy with the way Brad and Jensen never seemed to show up at the same time. Really, it was almost as if they’d choreographed it, except for the tiny detail of Brad and Jensen having never met.
Shaking his head, he reached out and grabbed his phone, quickly typing in a text to Adam.
Busy?
There was no answer, which could mean any number of things from Adam was asleep to he’d forgotten to take his phone off silent to he was in an interview/performing/meeting fans. Sighing, Kris turned back to the TV and blinked when another episode of Friends started. Glaring at the TV, he switched channels. He liked the show but it really sucked to watch it when it hurt to laugh.
Kris lasted almost a full five minutes watching...well, he wasn’t sure what he was watching. Something about truck drivers maybe. He made a face and picked up his phone again.
I’m bored and it’s all your fault.
He could practically see Jensen’s reaction to that one and grinned when his phone went off almost immediately.
How?
Kris’s grin widened. No talking rule. Hurts to laugh too.
You suck, watch something that’s so dumb you wonder how it got made.
And when I’m done watching your home videos?
You’ll bow down to me for coming to keep you company on my day off.
Like you weren’t going to end up here anyway.
Kris turned on his side and tossed his phone on to the table, shoulders shaking in silent laughter as he imagined Jensen rolling his eyes because what Kris had typed was true. After his shift, Jensen texted Kris to see if he needed anything or he stopped by. It was one of the rare weeks when Jensen had two days off and he’d ended up coming over the first time as well.
It was nearly half an hour later when there was a knock on the door. Kris glanced down at the blanket he’d wrapped around himself and sighed, wishing he could just shout that the door was open.
Then again, this was Los Angeles, it was probably a good thing he had to get up and check to see who was at the door.
He rolled his eyes when he saw Jensen making faces at the door and pulled it open, raising both eyebrows as if to ask what he was doing.
“You said you were bored,” Jensen explained, easily reading Kris’s look. “Thought I’d entertain you right from the start.”
Kris’ shoulders shook again as he fought not to laugh and motioned Jensen inside.
“I stopped to grab a couple of movies.” Jensen held up the bag in his hand. “Also, snacks because I’m betting you’ve gone through a lot of your snack food, slacker.”
Kris narrowed his eyes and then went back into the living room, picking up his notebook, which he’d been using to communicate.
Being sick isn’t slacking. You suck as a doctor.
Jensen grinned and pulled out the DVDs, showing off two of the latest new releases that Kris had mentioned wanting to see. Kris brightened and quickly wrote, I take it back, awesome doctor.
“That’s what I thought. Come on, let’s get these suckers started.” He shook his head when Kris moved to take the movies and pointed to the couch. “I can work a DVD player, Kris. You get the food.”
Kris failed to see the logic in making the sick person get the food since that was one way Jensen could get sick but he did it anyway, pulling out bags of chips and other snack foods that he’d have to work off once he was back to full energy. He wrapped the blanket around himself again, resuming his position from before and then hesitating when he realized that he really shouldn’t just take over the couch.
His worry turned out to be for nothing when Jensen came over and simply lifted Kris’s legs long enough to sit, something Kris was pretty sure he’d seen Jensen do at Steve’s when Chris had said that Jensen was preventing him from stretching out. As the previews started, Jensen settled back on the couch, stretching his own legs out, and Kris smiled as he focused on the screen.
He got so involved in the movies that he didn’t realize his phone didn’t go off once.
