Trust
Wild and woolly, she’d called him. She didn’t know the half of it, hardly anybody did. Only one person in all the world knew just how ‘wild and woolly’ Vin Tanner could be and Vin was almost certain that he’d lost that person. Not in the physical sense, exactly, but in every other sense that counts. He’d betrayed Chris Larabee’s trust by running off with Charlotte and he wasn’t sure he could regain that trust, at least not easily and not any time soon. The easy rapport that had cropped up the moment they first laid eyes on each other wasn’t so easy anymore. Eyes that had once been warm and welcoming were now cold and guarded.
Vin fought down a sigh as he stared down into his mug of beer. It had been a month since they got back from guarding that wagon train, since Vin had nearly run off to Brazil with Charlotte Richmond, and still there had been hardly any thaw in Chris’ attitude towards Vin. Vin had called himself all kinds of a fool for betraying Chris’ trust like that. It wasn’t often either of them trusted someone and, to find someone who knew you better than you knew yourself was rare.
The double swing doors of the saloon parted and Vin looked up, straight into moss green eyes. He frowned slightly when he saw a flash of emotion before those eyes became cold and guarded once again. Chris broke eye contact and headed over to the bar where he collected a bottle of whiskey and a shot glass before walking over to one of the empty tables and sitting with his back to the door.
Vin sat up straighter and looked around the saloon, noticing that he and Chris were the only ones of the Seven there. He looked back over at Chris with a renewed sense of hope. Maybe all was not lost. Certainly, Vin had violated the deepest level of trust between two men but, obviously, Chris still trusted Vin to watch his back.
Vin watched as Chris poured a shot and quickly downed it, a grimace coming to his lips as the alcohol burned a path to Chris’ stomach. Vin debated with himself for only a moment before standing from his chair and walking over to Chris’ table. “Mind if I join ya, cowboy?” Vin asked.
Chris looked up at him, a slight smile tugging at his lips. “Did you just call me a cowboy?” He replied.
Vin grinned as he sat down in the chair next to Chris’, his back to the wall and a full view of the saloon. Within moments the barkeep was setting another shot glass down in front of Vin. Vin nodded his thanks before pouring a shot for himself and downing it as quickly as Chris had.
Vin let out a contented sigh and leaned back in his chair, glad to have at least some things back to normal Chris slanted an amused look in Vin’s direction and Vin smiled. He knew it wouldn’t be easy to win back the level of trust he’d had a couple months ago, but there was hope.
End?

Date: 2006-07-30 04:23 pm (UTC)You aren't mad at me. And I totally understand. I made deadline by about 20 minutes, and I *swear* I would have said screw it if I'd had my three stories in. But this is a really nice moment, and a very realistic one. Lost trust isn't easily regained.
