Title: New Things to Do
Fandom: Original
Prompt: Splice
Warnings: none
Rating: G
Summary: I remember my old life while adapting to my new life. Cont. of my story of, after people.
I found my old MP3 player and mourned the loss of electricity. If it would only work I could just lose myself in the music stored within. I held the tiny object in the palm of my hand and sighed.
I missed music.
I couldn’t hold a tune to save my life. I had no rythem and I never dared dance in front of anybody. Now that I was alone I often found myself doing silly little dances. A quick jig of joy, or a bored shimmy. Man, did I miss music.
I set the device on the table and wiped a hand over my brow and turned away, once again focused on things that have taken over my life.
There was a small garden now flourishing in my back yard, weeds and all that needed tending to. The cat was staring at my from the back window, bright blue eyes glittering in the late afternoon light. I needed to lug some water to my new burning barrel for the soup I wanted to make tonight.
For nearly an hour I worked in the garden, pulling and adjusting plants. After, I walked to the water tower that I had fixed up to collect rainwater. I loaded two buckets into my water boiling pot and set the fire to boil. As the vegetables were set to boil, I returned to the house and set a bit of canned cat food before the cat. The cat eagerly devoured the meat and I curled my lip.
Before, I hadn’t liked meat, and now that meat was so scarce, I found myself living without it entirely. Once or twice I felt myself craving maybe a hotdog, or hamburger, but, like always, they quickly passed.
I sat at the kitchen table with the cat at my feet and once again noticed the MP3 player. I picked it back up and tried to remember what music was stored within. Some pop, mostly rock, a little classical.
I stood and went back outside and stirred the soup. Once finished, I returned to the house, then went to my bedroom where I had the vague memory of headphones. I dug under the bed and then through two chests where I had stuffed lots of things I never used anymore.
Finally, I found them. Three sets of ear buds, the wires tangled and knotted. I sat on the floor, my cat rubbing against my back as I worked the knots.
I cursed as I finished. The wires were cut and worn in several places, so I had to splice the wires together, taking several minutes to find black electrical tape. Once I had the ear buds fixed up to work, I turned my attention to finding a power source.
I had a drawer full of batteries that hadn’t seen the light of day since… well, forever.
I pulled out a handful and set them up on the table, shoving the cat out of the way.
There were spare parts left over from when my car needed fixing, so I rummaged into the tool box and found wires and more tape. I worked the batteries into a suitable pack and connected it to the MP3 player. With a grin, I saw the screen light up and the display shine with bright colors. I turned to the music and connected the ear buds.
I put the music to random and walked back out the door to the boiling soup, my hips swinging to the beat.
