Summary: Dean smiled, it was small and it hurt but it was a smile and he needed it.
“Sam left?” Lisa asked, her voice soft as she came into the front room.
Dean finished locking the door and turned to her, not knowing what to say. He had tried to break up with her, after the crap he’d pull he expected her to be pissed at him. Hell he wouldn’t blame her if she was, but she wasn’t. She just watched him, waiting.
“Um yeah,” Dean scratched the back of his neck feeling unsure “people to save, evil bastards to kill.”
She made the choice for him, crossing over to stand beside him, looping her arm in his as she looked up at him “And you didn’t go with him.”
“That’s not my place anymore.” Dean’s voice was flat, and he wanted to pull back, wanted to go in the kitchen and grab the bottle of scotch and forget for a second that this whole shit storm had happened. He could see the doubt in her eyes, the resignation that it was only a matter of time before he took off. He didn’t want to be that guy, wasn’t going to be that guy.
He’d brought this on Lisa and Ben, and he owed it to them to stick around. They took care of him, hell more than once Lisa had hauled his drunken ass off the couch and to bed, telling him it was going to be okay when they both knew it wasn’t.
But that had helped, because he needed to hear someone say it.
“Do you know he’s been back the whole year.” Dean choked out, his voice rough and tight with anger and pain. “He’s been back and he didn’t tell me, hell Bobby knew too and neither of them were going to breathe a word about it.”
His pain was reflected in her eyes and she pulled him closer, hugging his side “I’m so sorry.”
“Yeah.” he breathed just taking comfort in her warmth and asked, needing to change the subject “Ben in bed?”
Her smile was soft and knowing “All tucked in, he wants you to check in on him before you head to bed though.” She laid her head on his shoulder for a second, telling him “He also gets out early tomorrow so I told him you’d pick him up. I also called the Construction Company and told them a family emergency had come up and you’d be out for a week.”
Dean breathed a sigh of relief and leaned down to press a kiss to her forehead “Thanks.”
She turned her head to lean up and press a soft kiss to his lips “It’s what I’m here for, and if you ever try to pull something like that again I’m kicking your ass. See you when you come to bed.” with that she pulled away and started walking up the stairs.
Dean smiled, it was small and it hurt but it was a smile and he needed it. He wanted to follow her up the stairs, wanted to fall asleep beside her.
But he couldn’t. He was going to go into the kitchen, grab a beer, check the doors and windows one more time before going upstairs. He was going to watch Ben sleep, check his windows, and when he was sure everything was as safe as it was going to get he was going to go lie down beside Lisa and probably only sleep when he couldn’t keep his eyes open any longer.
Things had changed, but his routine wouldn’t.
