Summary: Direct continuation from last prompt. Jacky tries to understand just what Telepinu is.

Dumbfounded, Jacky faced forward again, letting this new information sink in.
A god? A god was inside him? Was that the presence he felt inside him? He swallowed, wishing that he still had the wineskin. His throat was really dry, and the steady rocking of the horse with the strong thighs of the man behind him hugging his own was making bringing a heat to his body he really would rather not be experiencing.
Then the two things connected in his mind. The god inside him, Telepinu, the fertility god, was doing this to him. He remembered the ceremony with the colorful flowers and the many, many people that had surrounded him. And the man that had touched him. The same man that had come into his room and spoke with him.
Jacky closed his eyes and tried to remember what the man had said. Now that he had begun to understand the language, maybe he could understand what he had said. Now, what were the words. He settled back against Mata’ka’ala’s chest and let himself drift back. He slept once more.
Mata’ka’ala shook him awake awhile later, his low voice in his ear. “Wake, Telepinu.” Jacky’s head drifted up from his shoulder. Before them, the trail led down a slight incline and toward a city built behind stone walls. Jacky licked his lips, made a face at the taste of dust on his lips, then forced himself upright and away from Mata’ka’ala’s body. There was a tug inside him, as if the god were protesting the loss of the touch. Jacky ignored it.
“Jarablos?” he asked, his voice rough from sleep.
“It is,” Mata’ka’ala said.
The city was golden in the late sun’s light, but Jacky could still see the damage done to the beautiful buildings. Black marred some building’s facades, while other’s had missing walls. There were scaffoldings erected all over the city, and the evidence of reconstruction was everywhere.
“The Sea People were here?”
“Many weeks ago. They will not look for us here.”
Jacky nodded, then noticed that the people coming to greet them were mostly staring at the two of them.
“They stare because I’m Telepinu?”
“You are their hope.”
Jacky had never been subject to so many intent stares in all his life. Well, probably during that fertility festival, but that didn’t count. Jacky shrank back against Mata’ka’ala’s body, his heart beating like a jackhammer. “I don’t like this.”
“Telepinu will.”
And he was right. Jacky could feel the god inside him responding favorably to all the attention. It was swelling in his chest, making his skin tingle and tighten. Mata’ka’ala pushed him away from the shelter of his larger body and cloak and into the sight of all the people. Shivering, Jacky suffered their gazes as the horse led them into the city and then into the center.
They dismounted and they were instantly surrounded. There were hands everywhere, touching and groping. There were lips touching bare skin everywhere, and the only thing that was keeping Jacky from bolting was Mata’ka’ala’s arm around his waist. Jacky could only catch a few words in all the hubbub, and what he did catch didn’t give him any comfort.
They couldn’t possibly believe he was going to be able to save them, just by being here. But they did. And there was so much hope in their faces and voices. Jacky felt terrible, and afraid.
Mata’ka’ala had called Telepinu the Summer Prince and somehow Jacky felt that that wasn’t a good thing. Somewhere he seemed to remember that Summer Princes were a type of sacrifice. Their blood given to the gods to create a new life. Jacky shivered, his body going numb.
But that was a long time ago, even for these people, wasn’t it? They didn’t do that sort of thing now, did they? He pressed his body back against Mata’ka’ala’s, trying to escape the roaming hands.
This was a terrible nightmare.
