Summary: They wanted their commanding officer to be proud of them.

The hammer of many pairs of booted feet against the parade grounds startles him from the stack of papers Hawkeye had deposited in front of him shortly after lunch. Roy goes to the window to see what the commotion’s about. There was nothing on the schedule calling for a formal presentation of troops. He has a sneaking suspicion this has to do with Ed. The door opens behind him and he hears Hawkeye, “Sir, are you alright?”

“Yes, I’m fine. Do you know what this is about?” He turns toward her and gestures at the parade grounds through the window. Hawkeye shakes her head no and comes to join him. They both peer out the window at the spectacle. It’s unusual enough for this time of day that most of the others who are in their offices are probably watching too. From this distance it’s hard to make out faces but the bearing of each soldier is proud. He spots a few nervous ones too. What’s going on?

He sees a figure approach from the direction of Central Library with a book in hand oblivious to the sight before them. The soldiers are now at attention. It seems they were waiting for whoever this figure is. Roy opens the window then gives Hawkeye a smile. “I believe we’re in for a treat, Colonel.”

Central Command was designed to allow voices on the parade ground to carry if only for pomp and circumstance. He doubts they were planning for anything like this. The voice of one of the officers calling out “Attention” drifts through the window and the figure carrying the book comes to a standstill. He freezes and stares out over the arrayed soldiers before him. Roy wonders how long it’ll take and he grins when the moment doesn’t last long at all.

“WHAT THE FUCK DO YOU IMBECILES THINK YOU’RE DOING?!” Yup, that’s his Edward alright and he hears Hawkeye’s chuckle from beside him. Roy watches Ed stalk up to someone who has to be one of his officers and grab him by the collar to shake him. “Explain yourself, Lieutenant.”

Right now, Roy loves the architect of this compound because even though Ed’s no longer yelling he can still hear him clearly. The quiet menace in Ed’s words also comes in perfectly clear. “Sir, we wanted to present ourselves for your inspection, sir.”

He can imagine Ed’s face gaping in shock at first before it darkens into a scowl. He crosses his arms and leans closer toward the window. What he couldn’t give to have an office closer to the parade grounds. He’s torn between wanting to walk out to join Ed and hear all this in person with the risk he misses something entertaining or staying here and missing nothing.

Ed releases the man with a slight shove and stalks toward the first row of soldiers. He gets up in the face of several more soldiers but doesn’t say a word. Roy assumes those are some other officers in Ed’s command. He spins on his heel and stalks to a position in front of all the assembled men then turns to face them. His arms are crossed behind his back and he regards them for a long moment before speaking. “You men and women comprise the whole of my command, new recruits and old hands, and you…,” Ed pauses to search for words, “will never arrange yourselves in such a display ever again. To join the military, to serve your country, is an honorable task which sometimes will call on you to perform deeds you never thought possible. But to show off, raise yourself above others, as if your service is the only one that matters will only breed resentment.”

Roy doesn’t know what Ed does but he can imagine he’s scowling at them. If there used to be a commotion, Ed would be at the center of it. He was well known for being the center of attention wherever he went so he’s speaking from experience here. Things have changed and he smiles more as he listens for Ed to continue. “Your Fuhrer, no, your country can’t afford that right now. You may be excited to be going on this diplomatic expedition to Aerugo with me but your antics today have just painted targets on your backs.”

Ed walks down the space between the two blocks of his soldiers. “Those of you new to this may see it as an adventure while the old hands of you should know better. It’s a task and nothing more. Things are far from settled and we cannot be anything but cautious.” He’s reached the last row of soldiers and turns to walk back up their ranks. “So if you want an inspection? You’ll get an inspection.”

Roy laughs as he steps back from the window. Ed’s soldiers are going to be in for a surprise because they’re now going to be inspected within an inch of their lives. When he wants to, Ed’s eye for detail is torturous and he’s going to turn it on them to ensure they don’t make this kind of stupid mistake again. Hawkeye clears her throat then says, “Well, that was interesting.”

He glances at her and there’s amusement on her face. He’s not sure either of them have been treated to this side of Ed before. “Think we should worry?”

“They haven’t mutinied against him yet, sir.” Hawkeye eyes the stack of paperwork on his desk and looks askance at him which is his cue to head back to his seat.

“Valid point,” he says as he pulls back his chair and sits down again. “I’ll try and get these finished by the end of the day, Colonel.” Hawkeye nods and heads for the door, hand on the knob to pull it shut behind her. “Oh, and Colonel?” At her look back, Roy continues. “You’re welcome to join Fullmetal on the parade grounds for a more…thorough investigation.” A slight smile crosses Hawkeye’s face.

“Duly noted, sir. Fullmetal may…appreciate my help.”

“I’ll expect a full report from the both of you at a later time.” Roy chuckles as Hawkeye nods before she shuts the door. Yeah, Ed definitely will appreciate it but his men won’t. Now back to paperwork before he’s the one receiving a point by point inspection.
