Summary: Jacky and Mata’ka’ala resume life on the road.

Jacky did what Jacky did best; he slept. His head lulled on Mata’ka’ala’s shoulder as they traveled down the road. Mata’ka’ala chose not to push the horse, as they were a lone horse travelling, and Kuzi-Teshub had a whole army. The gentle rolling of the horse’s gait lured him to sleep, letting him catch up on the sleep the god had denied him.
When he did finally wake, the landscape had given way to dried brush and thin trees. The ground for as far as the eye could see was brown with only the barest hint of green still remaining. Jacky looked around them as Mata’ka’ala urged the horse off the road and deep into the surrounding shrubs.
He dismounted before reaching up to help Jacky down. Jacky nearly lost his balance and had to cling to Mata’ka’ala until his legs could hold him. He pressed his face to Mata’ka’ala’s shoulder and breathed in his unique scent. Instantly, his body remembered the scent and tightened, and heat pooled in his lower stomach. He pressed their bodies flush and could feel Mata’ka’ala’s body respond.
He couldn’t help the satisfied smile that curved his lips when Mata’ka’ala’s hands moved up and down his back in soothing strokes. Then Mata’ka’ala gripped his shoulders and pushed him away.
“Gather what you can for a fire.”
He set Jacky away from him and turned to tend the horse.
Jacky glanced around what was to be their campsite and worried that he wasn’t cut out to survive out in the wilderness. His hands flexed at his sides as he walked toward a bush that was more twigs than leaves and began gathering fallen twigs into his arms.
Behind him, he could hear Mata’ka’ala moving about and settling the horse. Once his hands were full, Jacky piled the twigs in a neat stack and went for more. After he settled the horse, Mata’ka’ala finished Jacky’s project and placed stones around the twigs. He pulled a pair of rocks from the saddlebags and lit the fire. Jacky returned with more wood to burn and crouched beside the fire pit.
Mata’ka’ala took a long look at Jacky before he regained his feet. “Stay here and call for me if you come into danger.”
“Where are you going?” Jacky moved to stand, but Mata’ka’ala put a hand on his shoulder, pressing him back down to the ground.
“I will hunt for our supper. You will stay here.”
Jacky could feel his eyes go wide as he watched Mata’ka’ala walk away. Suddenly, the nice afternoon had become something to fear. He quickly looked around the campsite, fearful of what was out there. This was the first time he’d been without Mata’ka’ala near enough to touch. His heart began to pound in his ears. Then he realized how stupid he was being. He shook his head and took several deep breaths. He was acting as if Mata’ka’ala’s leaving for a moment was the end time and he was left to the evils of the wild. He closed his eyes and tried to calm his breathing, to press back the rising panic.
With his eyes closed, he could better feel his own emotions and the god’s presence. Was this rising fear the fear of Telepinu? Did he fear being left behind by Teshub? His eyes snapped open, and he sorted out his emotions. He didn’t fear the rolling dry hills of ancient Anatolia. Telepinu feared being left behind.
To distract himself from the god’s overwhelming presence, Jacky poked the fire with a stick, urging the flames higher. Mata’ka’ala didn’t seem to fear that they were being followed, nor did he fear that a fire would be spotted. Jacky followed the white smoke with his eyes as it drifted high into the sky to blend into the blue.
Kuzi-Teshub was going to follow them until he had the soul of Teshub as his own. Jacky thought that perhaps he wasn’t in as much danger as Mata’ka’ala was, but he couldn’t survive in this time without Mata’ka’ala. He felt as if he were the innocent bystander at the wrong place at the wrong time. But then again, he had been pulled into this time by gods.
