Summary: When her life is utterly changed, Jessie finds that she has to change as well. In a world where society has collapsed, Jessie will find her bit of home.

The next few weeks passed quickly for Jessie. She spent most of her time before the fire, letting her leg recover. Osiris came and went with only a few words here and there, Jack making the most out of having a young, strong man at his bidding. The duster would come in late at night, tired and starving. He would check on Jessie’s leg despite her instance otherwise.
During the twilight hours, Jessie would force herself to her feet and prepare food for the workers. The married couple had a well-stocked cupboard and encouraged Jessie to make the most of it. She made what she knew, which were healthy soups meant to give a person much needed energy, and filling breads. She hadn’t had so much selection in ages.
Jack stayed far away from her at all times, but the two girls often found a moment or two during the day to sit with her and talk up a storm. Jessie didn’t do much in the way of talking, and let the girls talk about everything under the sun.
Osiris, on the other hand, found little time to sit about. He worked the hardest of them all, but he seemed to quite enjoy the hard, sometimes dangerous, work. Jessie envied him. She wasn’t much help until her leg healed.
Then she could stand it no longer. She forced her way out the cabin and into the harsh glare of the sunlight. She wore her scarf over her nose and lips, and a hat low over her eyes and sought a job left undone.
Maddie waved her over to the barn where the cows and pigs were kept well out of the sun’s harmful rays. She joined the girl and lowered herself gingerly to a low stool, her leg protesting. With a clenched jaw, she took a moment to adjust to the new position and then reached for a bucket.
The cows needed milking, and the eggs still needed gathering. There were stalls to clean yet, and even hogs to feed. These were all Maddie’s job, and the girl was willing to let Jessie help as she could. Together they worked through the list of chores and nearing twilight, Jessie made her way back into the cabin to begin cooking. Before she made it half way through the yard, she tripped and her bad leg crumpled under her. She crashed onto the ground with a curse and threw her hat from her as it tumbled over her eyes.
Why couldn’t she just heal already? She felt tears gather in her eyes and she cursed everything under the godforsaken sun. She cursed her throbbing leg, the men that gave it to her, and the slowness of her healing.
She took a moment to breathe deeply, to stop the tears from overflowing. They would do her no good here, now. She so wanted to cry for her father. But even if she did, she would never feel his strong arms around her.
Just as she thought that, she felt a pair of arms gather her up. Her eyes popped open and her arms quickly slid around Osiris’ neck. He quickly ducked into the cabin and deposited her on her usual chair before kneeling to check on her bandages.
“Did you damage it?”
“N-no. I don’t think so.”
“There’s no bleeding, so that’s good.”
His hands were gentle as they tended to the bandages and Jessie couldn’t take her eyes off the hat still perched on his head. He had pushed it back, but with his head bowed over her leg, she couldn’t see his face at all. She wished she could, and she wished that she couldn’t. If she could see his face, then he could see hers. She wasn’t ready, she couldn’t force the emotions off her face just yet.
But he did look up and their eyes met and melted. The breath left her lungs in a rush and was once again overwhelmed with the feeling that they two were bonded.
The moment seemed to stretch on forever as they sat in silence with only the dying fire from the morning as their light. Beguiled by the moment, Osiris sat up fully and gathered Jessie into his arms. She nestled her cheek on his shoulder, and he could feel her trembling.
“I know that being Out There has taught you to always be strong, but it’s alright to be weak for a moment. I’ll protect you, Jessie. Please, let me protect you. Let yourself be protected.”
Her trembling grew and she buried her face in his shoulder. Her tears couldn’t be stopped. “Who are you? What is happening between us?”
He pulled away so that he could cup her chin in the palm of his hand. His thumb brushed at the tears on her cheek. “We are the same, you and I. Growing up Out There. I know what it is like to be always on guard and wary of everybody. I don’t want anybody to have to live like that. I hate that so many do. Let me help you. Let me help you as I couldn’t help my family.”
Still fighting tears, Jessie nodded her head. Despite what she had been taught time and again by life, she trusted this man, and she still couldn’t explain why. She trusted him with everything. She fell into his arms and held on for all she was worth.
He just may be the death of her, but something inside her soul was telling her that he just may be her life.
