Summary: Mordred was walking along the various aisles of an ancient history museum.

Mordred was walking along the various aisles of an ancient history museum. All visitors had gone hours ago and he was alone. He wasn't really doing anything illegal, he was only helping a friend who happened to be a guard and who had a date on this specific evening. He was only being a guard and with his experience of sneaking around and plotting he fancied himself to be a good guard. Though it didn't matter much because it was simply a regular night and he knew it was highly unlikely that anything would happen on that night. But he had a duty to perform and so was wandering in the corridors of the museum.

He had never really set foot in this place before. Art had never been one of his major interest, especially when it came to art from even before his time. He hadn't much interest in men before his time. He was old enough and had seen plenty to ever want to know what had happened before him. It was all the same in any case he thought. All blood, death, mis-loved and destruction.

He was coming to the end of his first walk when a sculpture caught his eyes. He had seen something like it before, a long long time ago. He had barely been a child then. It had been in his very first life and Morgause had called him to her chambers in the middle of the night. His eyes had been heavy with sleep but the excitement of being called by Morgause at such an hour was slowly waking him, sending rush of adrenaline from the fear and wonder he had felt.

Mordred stopped and stepped closer to the sculpture. It was some sort of mythological creature with the head of a woman, the body of a lion, the tail of a serpent and what appeared to him to be eagle wings. Yes, he had seen that creature once before. His mother had had a similar sculpture in her room on that first night she had called him to her chambers. He could remember now. He had been fascinated with the association of so many different animals into one creature which had seemed so elegant and mesmerizing to him. He had wanted to know more about it but Morgause had dismissed his questions as unimportant and he had been wiser than to ask again later. Annoying Morgause was never a good thing. He had figured she would tell him if he needed to know. But apparently he had never needed to know.

His eyes looked down at the museum inscription. A sphinx. It was a sphinx. As he read on the label created by the museum, in a vague attempt to educate people, he learned that the creature was qualified of treacherous and merciless, asking a riddle to people to let them in what it was guarding. If people failed to answer the creature would eat them alive. Mordred couldn't help but twitch his lips into an ironic smile. Of course Morgause would have liked that image and would have wanted it in her rooms. It was just like her. Treacherous and merciless.

Mordred stared at the creature for a few more seconds.

"Sphinx."

The word rolled out of his mouth in a quiet whisper, as if by saying it, he was letting go of another memory of his past, as if he was letting go of another image of his mother, setting himself free from her grasp.
