Summary: Sometimes taking a stand doesn’t work out the way you hope.
She stood, head held high, proud—haughty even—straight and tall and without an ounce of shame. Wasn’t that one of the qualities he had loved her for, that had been passed down through his own memories in the process that created her?
Her eyes were on him as the guards retired from the room. As soon as the door closed he stood from behind his desk and approached her. His manner was of controlled anger, but he didn’t burst out and begin yelling.
“Agent Texas, I would ask you just what you thought you were doing, but I’m certain that I already know.” He looked at her askance and paced to look at her from the side. “I have no doubt you planned this. What I don’t know is why you would ask others in this project to risk their good standing in order to accomplish a personal goal of yours. That was incredibly selfish, and as you see from the outcome, a completely hopeless endeavor.”
She did not turn her head. “It needed to be done. And I expected nothing less than success.”
“Well, as you now know, Alpha is not here.” He paced back around to face her. “Agent North has been apprehended. Agent York has disappeared. Would you happen to know his whereabouts?”
“I have no idea.” Her gaze remained level with his. She knew that to him her face was nothing but a blank visor, but that didn’t prevent her from exuding the attitude that she was defiantly scowling. If she did in fact know where York had gone, would she have told him? York was one of her best friends. Such as they were in this place. It was York that had approached her with the seed of this to begin with.
“We have to take a stand.” She believed that more than ever. The main problem was that without Alpha in her possession she couldn’t reveal that they had discovered what had been done to him. And she couldn’t protect Alpha. That was even more pressing.
“I’m sure you realize there will have to be consequences for your actions. You will be sent back out on the field, but you will be restricted to simulation bases until I see that you are sufficiently aware that your insubordination was unacceptable.”
He was speaking authoritatively. The look on his face showed he had not a single doubt in his mind that she would acquiesce. He folded his hands behind his back and waited for her to respond.
She couldn’t take the stand she wanted, but she could take one in this. “I will never stop searching for him,” she said, defiantly, coldly.
His eyes snapped to her visor sharply. “Then you will never get out of the simulation bases. Is that what you want? You think you’re going to find him there?”
“No,” she admitted.
“Alpha is no more powerful than you,” he said disdainfully. She felt a touch of relief. He didn’t suspect that she knew what he had done. He had drawn entirely the wrong conclusion about why they were seeking Alpha and he had no intention of correcting him. She didn’t respond, simply remained at attention. “You are dismissed, Agent Texas,” he said with some disgust. “I hope you will not choose to squander your talents for long.”
“I’ll do what I need to do,” she said. He knew he couldn’t control her. She turned and walked to the exit, her gait resolute. Yet she could not help turning her head for one glance at him before leaving. There were times she simply couldn’t believe that the memories she had of Leonard Church were memories of this man. How he had changed. She had no love for him.
