Mordred was standing still in front of the King. The entire court of Camelot was sitting around the tables watching him. He could feel their eyes on his back, scrutinising him, wondering who he was to dare enter the court almost unannounced. He didn't care though. He was Morgause's son, he was the King's son. Nobody knew that of course and he was under strict order to keep it a secret. It would be his weapon, his way to get what he wanted, his strenght against the King.
The King remained silent for a second too long after seeing the figure of Mordred. The young boy dared a knowing smile. Yes Arthur, I am your son. Your son you tried to drown when he was born.
"Mordred, welcome to Camelot." His voice was trying to be cheerful, as if he was glad to see another of the Orkney boys come to court. Only he wasn't a proper Orkney boy. "Come sit with us."
"Thank you sir." He bowed slightly, knowing he had to for now while all eyes were on him.
He walked to the empty seat Gawain was arranging next to him.
"What are you doing here? We weren't expected you for another day," whispered his brother to his ear.
"Aren't you glad to see me?" Mordred smirked at him, as if seeing Gawain again why was he had rushed here.
"That's not the point." Mordred felt his brother wanted to keep talking but he couldn't, not so publicly when Mordred would have no privacy for the night.
He settled in his chair, food and wine quickly being brought to him. He relaxed in his seat as if he had always been there. He was proud of himself. He could sense Morgause watching him from the Orkneys Islands and he knew she was proud. He was doing extremely well. He never showed any sign of nervousness and he had acted as if he owned the room.
The chatter resumed slowly in the room but the ease of the early evening had broken off. There was a cloud full of electricity hanging above the room, like a storm ready to blow. Everyone could feel it but everyone was pretending he wasn't there.
As Mordred took a sip of his wine he glanced over at Arthur. The eyes of the King had lost all the sparkle the young boy had glimpsed when first entering the room. They now were hollow and unfocused. He clearly wasn't in the room anymore. Mordred smiled once more. His introduction had been perfect, the first brush of his master piece, of his mother's master piece. It was a perfect start and that was all he had wanted that night. Now that he had caught the attention of everyone and instilled the first drop of tension in the court the rest would come easily.
He took a bite at his meat, enjoying the food. He was sure he would do well at Camelot. They all looked like miserable pathetic old fools. He would show them the way, he would rule them.
