Summary: He knew he couldnt't control the universe, he knew he couldn't always keep her safe and that was the worst of it.

Kevin crouched into the corner of his room. He looked anxiously around. The now bare walls seemed to be mocking him. He wished he could make them stop. He could see the lighter shades where his shelves had been, standing dangerously above his head, threatening to fall. He had taken them off but somehow that didn't make him feel safer.

He tried to push back against the wall but his back was already pressed against it.

He jumped as he heard the keys turn in the front door.

"Kevin, you're here?"

Kevin focused all his attention to Maria's movements. He prayed she wouldn't turn off the light. She always wanted to make his save on electricity. He heard the familiar sound of the switch. He closed his eyes tightly shut, trying not to protest. He knew she wanted the best for him but what did she have to turn of the lights. It was when shadows came that people got hurt.

"Kevin?"

He heard her step getting closer to his room. He tried to become smaller, to be swallowed by the wall. He would be safe then, he would melt with the house and be able to protect the people in it. He would hold the shelves steady, he would hold the structure on its feet.

"Ke..." He heard her step stopped abruptly under the doorframe of his room. She had seen the bare walls, the empty room and the soft mattress on the floor.

He clenched his jaw, encircling his knees with his arms, pressing them tight against his chest. He felt har hand on his shoulder.

"Kevin..." her voice was soft, sad. "Open your eyes."

"I can't..." His voice was trembling.

He wanted to look at her, he wanted to see his surroundings. He knew he would be safer if he could see, if he could control his environment but he didn't want to see her. He was afraid she hadn't listen to him, that she was still wearing her necklace that could strangle her, that she was still wearing the wrong shoes that could slip too easily. He didn't want to fight. She never understood, never would.

"It's not true." Her body pressed closed against his as she sat next to him. Her hand pressed his.

He pressed her palm hard, clinging to it. "Are you... do you..." The words wouldn't come out.

"You can't go on like this. You can't control the world and make it absolutely safe."

He leaned his head on her shoulder, trying to merge with her, to become the walls together.

"What if there were going to be an earthquake? The house would crumble down no matter how safe you made it. What if there were a fire at the neighbours? You couldn't keep it tamed. What if a car were driving too fast down the road and hit me? You can't control the driver."

Her voice was getting stronger.

"Stop! Stop! Stop!" Kevin yelled, his hands pressing against his ears. "Stop!" He knew all that. He knew he couldnt't control the universe, he knew he couldn't always keep her safe and that was the worst of it. He could keep her safe here with him but that wasn't enough. He wasn't enough.

His body started to rock back and forth, tears flowing down his cheeks. "Stop," he whimpered.

"Kevin... please..." her arms were enlacing him, trapping him in the safety of her arms. "Let me help. Let Doctor Francis help." She kissed his hair. "Please," she pleaded her voice muffled in his hair.

He pressed his body hard against her, colliding them against the wall. "Can... can Doctor Francis come here?"

"He can," she let go in a hurried voice.

"I can try then," he murmured trying to let go of his world. He had to try, get fix, and find some other way to protect her.
